If you have ever wondered, "What is Galentine's Day?" and why is everyone making such a big deal about it, it's time to get on board. Because it's maybe the best holiday of the year. Basically, it comes from Parks and Recreation and the perfect television character, Leslie Knope. It falls on the day before Valentine's Day and it's a celebration of all of the best gals in you life, because they're worth it.

Seriously. Female friendships are basically a life force for a lot of us. They're our support networks, right down in our sinews, and a lot of them last way longer than most romantic relationships. But I think they're seriously under-valued. Some of these people will have been a huge part of your life for years or even decades, but we normally take them for granted. It's just expected that you'll be there for each other. And sure, that's the great part about having close friends— knowing you can rely on them— but that doesn't mean they don't deserve some pampering once in a while. So it doesn't matter if you're in a relationship or not, celebrating Valentine's Day or not. February 13 is a chance to give some love to your female friends. And it's so much better than Valentine's Day.

Why? Well, here's why Galentine's Day is better than Valentine's Day:

1

Because There Are Other Holidays For Your Relationship

What about your anniversary? Hell, some people have more than one. Plus there's your birthday, your partner's birthday— there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate your relationship. And the whole world celebrates relationships all the time. But how often do you and your girlfriends, as a group, get to celebrate each other? You need to seize the opportunity.

2

Because It's Not Commercialized

You might love Valentine's Day, but let's all admit that it's tacky AF. It's aggressively commercialized into this red velvet sparkly rose of a holiday. But with Galentine's Day, there's none of that nonsense. It feels more genuine, because you're not having to navigate through the cheesiness of it all.

3

Because It's Way More Fun

Speaking of, because it's less of a cookie-cutter holiday, you get to celebrate however you want. Sure, you can do a spa day. Or you can go four wheeling. Or to karaoke. Or mountain climbing. Or crafting. There's no crowded restaurant and priced up champagne. Instead, you just get to cut loose and have fun — however you and your gals want to.

4

Because Leslie Knope

I mean, I don't think I need to explain this. I think it is science. Leslie Knope is better than not Leslie Knope. QED.

5

Because There's No Pressure

Even in the best relationships, Valentine's Day can feel like a lot of pressure. You don't want to get the wrong thing, you worry your partner will get something nicer or more thoughtful. And you just feel like you have to have the perfect date night. But with Galentine's Day, there's nothing like that. You don't need to live up to some expectation. Instead, it's just about you and your friends having a good time.

Happy Galentine's Day, everyone. Whether you're single or in a relationship, it's just the best holiday. So go on and celebrate.
