Your Everything Guide To At-Home Hair Color

First time DIYing your hair color? You're in the right place. Coloring your own hair at home can seem way more intimidating than booking an appointment at a salon, but thanks to all the new formulas on the market, it doesn't have to be complicated or messy (or both). With the right tricks, you can get the hair color you've always wanted without having to spend hours in a salon chair. Bonus: You'll save so. Much. Money.

To make the process impossible to mess up, we've partnered with Schwarzkopf. All you need to do is dream up the hair color you want. (NBD if a corner of your vision board is already dedicated to it.) Pro-tip: Check out your eyebrows to get a sense of your natural hair color, and try not to stray too far from that. A good rule of thumb is to stick within one or two shades lighter or darker than your starting color. Then, factor in skin tone. If you have a warmer skin tone, complement it with ashy shades like cool blonde or fawn-colored brown. If your skin tone is cooler, opt for warmer, richer hair colors, like chocolate brown and golden blonde. And if you have pinkish undertones, try a vibrant red hue. Can't decide? Check out Color Ultîme's 20-shade range for inspo — and keep whatever hue you choose vibrant with color-safe shampoo and conditioner.
