So you think you’re an interior designer? How do you feel being tasked with overhauling the insides of a hotel, yacht, or private jet — or preparing a staircase that thousands of people will see? For Lucinda Loya, such high-level, high-stress interior design challenges are her ballpark (and yes, she’s probably done one of those too).

The award-winning Houston powerhouse of tasteful design and creator of immersive experiences and sumptuous transformations has worked her magic and artistry on a grand staircase and powder room in an upscale Manhattan townhouse.

Highly Anticipated

But this was no ordinary project. The Upper East Side townhouse on 125 East 65th Street is the focus of the 49th annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York 2024 project, a prestigious event that brings together the best of interior design excellence. It’s a platform where designers like Loya can get creative and transform a luxury home into a stunning exhibition of fine furnishings, art, and technology.

Timeless Design

Loya’s focus on creating “couture interiors” that intersect art, history, nature, and modern design resulted in “Enchanted Roots,” a unique blend of artistic flair and organic elegance.

“Our goal was to create spaces that tell stories,” reflected Loya. “The designs celebrate the fusion of elegance and nature, providing an immersive experience that transports visitors into a realm of refined grandeur.” The inspiration for the project came from the rich history and natural beauty of the townhouse’s location, which is reflected in the design’s intricate details and organic elements.

Unique Collaboration

The house, designed in 1904, is a prime example of the magnificent homes that the city’s gentry called at the turn of the last century.

Loya’s design of the grand staircase offered a counterpoint to a stunning “Ripped” rug from the Lucinda Loya Interiors (LLI) upcoming 2025 collection. The staircase’s backdrop is adorned with custom wallpaper featuring a collage of 19th-century etchings that create a unified perspective.

As visitors ascend, they will be greeted by a tranquil waterfall that leads to the landing. This is adorned with large-scale custom cornices and alpaca drapery using luxurious fabrics. The highly detailed design extends to the main powder room on the second floor, which is dressed in Loya’s “Rift” wallpaper. The design was inspired by runway fashion and Loya’s vision of organic futurism. Pendants, luxurious accessories, and custom monogrammed towels also add a touch of refinement and sophistication.

Video art offers a delightful surprise, blending seamlessly with a unique “Melt” rug installation. These unique design elements, combined with Loya’s impeccable taste and attention to detail, create luxurious and inviting spaces.

Innovative lighting is a hallmark of LLI’s design, evident in the fixtures that mirror the delicate unfurling of fern leaves. Attention is given to the graceful passage of light and the shape of the sun, enhancing the space’s ambiance.

Every custom piece was meticulously finished, from the black piping on the bathroom vanity, alpaca drapery, and bench to the harmonious repetition of shapes and organic patterns on the rug, lighting, and art.

Redefining Space

LLI’s participation at Kips Bay further solidified its reputation for creativity and excellence, with its trademark of crafting soulful, thoughtful interiors that stand the test of time. Loya’s team offers a full-service interior approach that takes designs from clients’ visions and recreates them into the reality of their surroundings.

Her eclectic, high-end style has breathed life into private homes, commercial spaces, private jets, and professional sports facilities globally. The firm’s current projects include a villa in Cabo San Lucas, an expansive flat in the heart of New York City in Central Park Tower, and a home in the Hamptons.

“Our style has been described as eclectic high-end,” reflected Loya. “We have an exceptional eye for detail, with each project intensely personal: They are tailored to every client.”

Through dramatic contradictions of texture, pattern, and color cleverly paired with fine art, accessories, and antiques, Loya weaves a poetic sense of character and individuality through every space.

Loya is not just an interior designer; she is a dedicated philanthropist and a champion for women’s empowerment. She has contributed hands-on and advisory support as well as notable fundraising to numerous nonprofit organizations ranging from child advocacy to education and the arts.
