This DIY Sweatsuit Will Be Your New Holiday Uniform

How to DIY a look you'll never want to take off.

Whether DIYing is your go-to weekend activity or your crafting cred begins and ends with summer camp-era tie dye, the time-tested beauty of DIY is that literally anyone can do it. All it requires is a list of supplies, clear instructions, and your own two hands. These days, crafting is a perfect way to pass long hours spent at home, not to mention an easy way to get the unbeatable satisfaction that comes with making something from scratch.

When it comes to DIY's evolution from art class to oh-so-trendy, no one embodies it better than Erica Chan Coffman, creator extraordinaire and co-founder of lifestyle blog HonestlyWTF. Her style is light years ahead of your average duct tape wallet — you’ll find her DIYing everything from gorgeous dyed silk to delicate beaded bracelets.

From the beginning, Chan Coffman’s creative side was obvious in her love of art and design. “After graduating college, I moved to New York for the Jewelry Design program at FIT,” she tells Bustle. “I ended up working in the art auction industry but had a little side hustle designing jewelry and accessories.” She found that she loved teaching others her tricks — and so HonestlyWTF was born.

In the spirit of getting ready for the upcoming holiday season, Bustle and LAY'S® Poppables™ teamed up to enlist Chan Coffman to teach us a new take on classic tie dye, using some creativity and a little inspo from LAY'S® Poppables™ Sea Salt Potato Snacks to create a sweatsuit that's practically made for six weeks of elaborate meals, movie marathons, and big-time comfort.

Chan Coffman starts each new project by reminding herself and her followers of the one rule that makes all the difference: take your time. “Read and understand the instructions before starting,” she recommends. “Projects can seem so daunting and intimidating from the offset, but once you start, you might find that it's not as difficult as you imagined.”

For this endeavor, she found inspiration from somewhere out of her comfort zone. “Lately, I've been more interested in fiber arts — weaving, knotting, and dyeing,” she tells Bustle about the focus that led to her latest loungewear project. “I've had this idea of using bubbles to dye fabric for a long time. The name 'Poppables' immediately triggered this vision of colorful bubbles popping into splotches of wearable color!”

And so Chan Coffman designed a sweatsuit that reflects both the playful airiness of the snacks and the bold blue that makes the packaging pop. It's an outfit that’s as colorful as it is cozy, and best of all, you can make it yourself just in time for your holiday food coma. Here's how:

Watch Here!

Step 1: Pre-soak your sweatshirt and sweatpants in water. Then, wring them out and lay on a large, flat surface.

Step 2: Use your fingers to scrunch up the fabric, creating negative space.

Step 3: With a pipette, apply your dye to the fabric, starting with the lightest color (like pink). Drop the color onto the fabric and don’t forget to cover large areas. It should look like the color “popped” onto the sweatshirt and sweatpants.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 with the second-lightest color (like mustard yellow).

Step 5: Combine your darkest color (like dark blue) with a bubble-blowing formula.

Step 6: Use a bubble blower to blow the colored bubbles directly at the fabric, allowing them to pop on their own. Then, use the pipette to drizzle the color onto any areas you might have missed.

Step 7: Apply a light, vibrant color (Chan Coffman used teal in spired by LAY'S® Poppables™) with a pipette.

Step 8: Let the sweatshirt and sweatpants dry for an hour, wash them in cold water, and then tumble-dry on a low setting.
