8 Major Perks To Living By Yourself In College

by Chrissa Hardy

If you score a single dorm room in college, you've basically won the lottery. There is just no better way to have an amazing college experience than by having a single dorm room. Even if you've only had good roommates who have turned into best friends, you will be overwhelmingly psyched to get a room all to yourself. College is an incomparable life experience filled with tons of changes. There is a lot of pressure, and you're finally on your own for the first time. So it's a relief to know that you can process all of these changes in the comfort of a room you don't need to share with another human being.

Without roommates, there are so many little annoyances that you won't have to deal with. Sure, being forced to live with people you don't know is a way to take you out of your comfort zone and meet new people, but too many college roommate scenarios don't have happy endings. The space is too small and too crowded for roommates to remain friends. So living day to day on your own schedule in a space that is purely yours is a dream come true. Here are all the reasons why having a single room in college is the best.

1. No random alarms waking you up

There will be no repetitive snooze buttons pushed by the sleepy roomie who has no intention of getting up on time. You get to wake up when YOU choose to wake up, and not a minute before.

2. All the food is yours

You don't need to write your name on your yogurt containers or your pizza leftovers. Nobody will scarf down your snacks when you aren't looking. Every item in the fridge is yours and yours alone.

3. You can be as clean or as messy as you'd like

There is no one else to compromise with on room cleanliness, because the entire space is yours. You can keep it as clean as you'd like, or throw your dirty laundry all around the room, because, hey, who's gonna stop you?

4. No one will judge you for your weird habits and routines

We all have strange quirks. We all have little routines that we prefer to do when nobody else is around. Well, in a single room, you can do those weird things without judgement from others. Let your freak flag FLY.

5. You can get naked whenever you want

Naked time is important. In order to really love the body you were given, you need to spend a decent amount of time in your b-day suit. And you can't really do that with roommates.

6. No random sex guests with roomies

My first roommate had a constant stream of random sex guests, and it made me extremely uncomfortable. She had no problem doing it with me in the room, and it was really an awful situation. But without roommates, you don't need to worry about any of that. The only sex guests will be yours.

7. Your concentration will improve immensely

Roommates are major distractions, and without 'em, you won't have anything competing for your attention. You can shut everything down when you need to study, and you can turn up the music as loud as you'd like once you're done.

8. Your friends will be insanely jealous

Everyone wants their own room in college. Most people don't get them until their junior or senior year when they move off campus. So if you're lucky enough to get one early on, know that everyone you know is extremely jealous of your living situation. And that's always nice.
