Tons of stars transform themselves for photoshoots, and I love it every time they do. Seeing insane talent of makeup artists, photographers, and stylists is always a treat, especially when the models are some of my favorite celebs. This time, the Harper's Bazaar Icons Spread transformed Katy Perry, Oprah, and Mariah Carey into their favorite icons in beautiful photos captured by the talented and world renown photographer Jean-Paul Goude. The shoot styled by Carine Roitfeld, the glossy's global fashion director, is stunning, and the entire spread hasn't even been released yet!
In the past, we've definitely seen how the powers of hair and makeup can transform a person. The perfect examples are the stunning images of famous celebrities as your favorite Disney characters. Jessica Chastain transformed in Brave's Merida while Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony looked gorgeous as Jasmine and Aladdin in another image. Meanwhile, Olivia Wilde kills it as Maleficent. The artistry that goes into creating something of that caliber is stunning, and Harper's Bazaar's Icon spread appears as if it's going to do the same thing. With mega stars like Katy Perry, Oprah Winfrey, and Mariah Carey already having images realeased, the rest of the spread is sure to be full of A-Listers. Dakota Johnson and Lucky Blue are just two of the other names associated with the shoot.
So far, I've seen Perry, Winfrey, and Carey's images, and they're gorgeous! In the spread, Perry is transformed into the iconic Elizabeth Taylor in images that actually look pretty mod. Of her choice to become Taylor, Perry says, "Liz was so fabulous and decadent and had a style that evolved with the years … and I’m sure I’ll be married just as many times!” Perry's sense of humor is fantastic, but she's also spot on about Taylor's style being an evolution, much like Perry's herself.
Winfrey's image on the other hand doesn't transform the philanthropist and host into another celebrity. Instead, she chose to become Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz. The celeb is meaning in the image, and her styling in a pink, tulle dress is totally on point. Winfrey says, "Glinda is a spiritual goddess. I love when she says to Dorothy, ‘You’ve always had the power.’ That is the message for all of us: You’re born with it, you always have it. It doesn’t matter how many yellow brick roads you go down, it’s always right there in your heart.”
Carey's image is again different. She's featured as the infamous Marie Antoinette swinging through the trees. Carey enjoyed her shoot, but she doesn't necessarily believe she and the queen have a lot in common. She says that she is, "pretty much the opposite of Marie Antoinette, but it’s always fun to throw on a costume." I'm not sure I believe that, but to each their own.
With the few images I've seen from the spread, I can't wait to see the rest. Transformations are fun whether it's you undergoing the change or simply watching your favorite stars undergo their own. Either way, these images are stunning.
