8 Boob Inspired Items To Sartorially Free The Nip

by Gina Jones 2

It sometimes seems like a lifetime ago that the #freethenipple movement began, but realistically we have a long way to go before nipple equality is truly achieved for all. In the meantime, however, we can turn to boob inspired fashion and accessories.

The female breast is inarguably stigmatized and sexualized in a way that male chests just aren't, which many of us can agree is an act of plain sexism considering both male and female chests are made of all the same parts. Many people are unfortunately misinformed into believing that breasts are an inherent sexual organ, when in reality they're a secondary sex characteristic. As one Tumblr user pointed out, so are male enlarged Adam's apples and facial hair.

However, as much as I'd love to join the mammary movement and free my nipple outside of a perfectly poised Instagram selfie, I have several issues with #freethenipple. These come from both a political and a personal standpoint, as very often agreeing with a movement can be completely different to being willing or able to participate in said movement.

If, like me, you can't see yourself running through the city center with your lady friends out anytime soon, you can support the movement with these too-cool Etsy finds. These eight items will help you make your point without having to make yourself uncomfortable along the way.

1. The Eggy Boobs

Fried Egg Crop Top, $40, etsy.com

This super cute tee is titled "egg boobs" and the Butterbabes shop offers a variety of different food products to represent your breasts. I have a feeling I'd be better suited to a papaya than a fried egg.

2. The Boobie Ring

Imagine being in a cute coffee shop with a friend whose political views you're still unsure of. They lean over to grab the sugar and spot your über cute boobie ring. It's the perfect conversation starter.

3. The Mammary Scarf

This scarf appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and offers you the options of different nipple colours and/or a piercing.

5. The OTT Playsuit

Vertigo Inflatable Mega Boob Playsuit, $633, etsy.com

This latex jumpsuit comes with inflatable breasts, so you too can look just like a hentai cartoon. It's a little over the top and quite the financial commitment, but hey, you can't put a price tag on latex playsuits.

6. The Funny Baby Hat

Crochet Baby Boob Hat, $7, etsy.com

These adorable hats are the perfect response to those against public breast feeding. I think I'd just dress my kid in this all the time, though, regardless of our feeding situation.

7. The Perfect Pendant

Boob Pendant in Polymer Clay, $25, etsy.com

This handmade necklace was made in honor of the shop owner's grandmother who sadly passed due to breast cancer. All proceeds go to charity and raising awareness.

8. The Dapper-ish Cufflinks

Laser Cut Wood Cufflinks, $20, etsy.com

Bring your guy friends on board the #freethenipple movement by gifting him these gorgeous laser cut wooden cufflinks.

There you have it: An alternative way to #freethenipple and support the destigmatization of female breasts without having to bare your own. Although, hey, if you wanna bare your own, that's pretty cool too.
