Sonja Morgan Is A 'Real Housewives' Role Model

by Casey Galasso

I absolutely adore Sonja Morgan of The Real Housewives of New York City . And, for good reason. Honestly, I’d be content coming back in my next life as one of Sonja’s interns, just so I could have the opportunity to soak up some of her awesomeness. At 51 years old Sonja is the epitome of "age ain't nothing but a number." She has a better dating and social life than some of my twenty-something friends, that's for sure. I mean, how could you not be obsessed/secretly envious of that? The Real Housewife is the reason I started watching RHONY, and she’s the reason I continue to tune in year after year. Let's be real, Sonja Morgan is a true role model.

You've probably had a friend like Sonja in your life at some point; A little self-centered, eccentric, and completely hilarious, Sonja is the one you call to act as your wing woman, or to cry with after a bad breakup — and then hit the town with an hour later. She’s the friend you want in your corner, and the one who seems to know everything about the social scene. Don’t let Sonja’s perfect complexion and sinister smile fool you. Beneath the designer duds, laundry list of suitors, and youthful exterior, there’s another side to Sonja. She’s a quite an awesome force to be reckoned with — and it's super inspiring to watch.

1. She Genuinely Doesn’t Give A Crap

There are people who say they don’t care what others think of them, and then there are people who say it and mean it. Sonja falls into the latter category. We’ve watched every New York City Housewife (and plenty of fans) tell her to go in one direction, and she will go the total opposite way if she believes in it badly enough. Frustrating? Sometimes. Admirable? Absolutely. This woman can’t be shaken, and, while some may call it stubborn, I call it confident.

2. She’s Got Style

Women should never have to feel they need to dress a certain way because of their age, and Sonja certainly doesn't follow what society expects. Style is such a personal choice and a real expression of who you are. It’s a way to tell the world about the type of person you want to be, without saying a single word. Sonja nails that combination of classy/sexy/age-appropriate in a way that's hard to master. She takes styles normally reserved for tweens and teens (glitter, bows, and animal print) and adds her characteristic stamp of elegance to them.

3. She’s An Eternal Optimist

From a divorce, to a lawsuit, to plenty of failed business ventures, Sonja’s optimism never wavers. She has an amazing sense of faith and belief that everything is going to work out in the end. In a world where people are more pessimistic and stressed out than ever, Sonja’s optimism is a breath of fresh air and a reminder to let go of what we can’t control, and focus instead on the good things we have in life to be thankful for.

4. She Doesn’t Listen To The Haters

Every single cast member on season 7 of RHONY doubted that Sonja Morgan’s clothing line could be a real thing — and to be honest, I was a bit skeptical of it myself. But, of course, in true Sonja fashion, she stood her ground and proved everyone wrong; she now has an unbelievable womenswear line that debuted at New York Fashion Week. While her designs may be a bit out of my price range, a girl can dream right?

5. She Thinks Like A Businesswoman

After moving to New York City from Albany, Sonja worked as a hostess at San Pietro, an Italian restaurant in Manhattan. Sonja saw this job as a golden opportunity to schmooze with the upper crust of New York City, and a businesswoman was born. Since then, Sonja graduated from FIT with a degree in marketing, and has been able to brand herself as a New York City personality (remember Sonja in the City?), lifestyle guru, fashionista, and philanthropist.

6. She’s Real

As a member of a cast that thrives on drama, Sonja is the first one to tell it like it is (Well, she & Bethenny Frankel). She’s candid, outspoken, and honest, but also extremely compassionate, caring, and protective of those closest to her. She works hard to shield her daughter from the prying eyes of the cameras, and isn’t afraid to poke fun at herself. She may be over-the-top at times, but at the end of the day, she’s a woman who knows who she is and what she wants. And that is something to be proud of, and an inspiration to women everywhere.
