Jo Bros Are All About Staying Friends With An Ex

by Michelle McGahan

The 2015 MTV VMAs were pretty much this year's pop culture peak (see: everything host Miley Cyrus did, Kanye West announcing that he's running for president, Justin Bieber crying), which only means that the after-parties were just as culturally relevant. Though there was no #Jelena moment to be found (though some fans tried to pass this off as one), Selena Gomez was photographed talking with ex Nick Jonas at a Republic Records' post-VMAs celebration. But before you can start dusting off the anchors on the S.S. Nelena, let's just pause for a moment and consider that, a) the two are (probably) just friends, and b) how totally awesome it is that they're cool with each other. In fact, the Jonas Brothers are basically experts at being friends with their famous exes.

Though I'm not sure what the stats are on Joe Jonas' current relationship with exes Ashley Greene and Blanca Eggenschwiler or Nick Jonas' post-breakup relationship with Olivia Culpo (side note: has Kevin Jonas ever even dated anyone besides current wife Danielle?), the fact remains that two-thirds of the Jo Bros are still close with their most famous ex-girlfriends — Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato for Joe, and Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus for Nick. The fact that they've maintained friendships (or at least non-awkward moments at parties) already makes this more impressive than anything I've ever done. Hats off to you, Jonas Brothers. Hats off.

Sure, Gomez and Nick look cozy in this pic, but for all the world knows, this could have been just a fleeting moment at the party and nothing more. Fluke pic or not, there's no denying that the exes are still on good terms. Nick told Capital FM of running into Gomez in July,

We kind of ran into each other a couple of weeks ago, like walking in Venice. We were both with separate groups of friends and we ran into each other. I put a dinner together with a bunch of really great people, like the Haim girls, who I love. They're awesome. They're the best. It was a big group of people and we all had a great time. We connect in that sense.

Swift and Joe had a pretty public breakup (in which both singers called one another out in their music), but in 2015, the past is in the past for these guys. Nothing says "friendly exes" like double-dating with their respective new partners.

Joe and Lovato rode the Camp Rock wave together (and admittedly smoked pot together), and that apparently is a bond that doesn't break, even after a breakup. The nostalgia memories ride high with these two, even going as far as to perform "This Is Me" live on stage together in 2014.

Nick and Cyrus may not be besties today, but there is a sincere respect there, according to the Jo Bro."We've always had respect and wished the best for each other. I don't know that I have any regrets. It's more gratitude for having had a good friend in a time of craziness in my life and in hers," he told Elle about his Disney Channel-era relationship with Cyrus.

Obviously, the Jonas Brothers are doing something right when it comes to how they handle their breakups, because considering their former flings, there should really be a hundred bitter songs about them out there.
