Anne Hathaway Wears Something Really Unexpected

by Melodi Erdogan

Well this is an interesting outfit. Anne Hathaway attended the premiere of The Intern , her latest film, at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City, and wore a sparkling, feathered, asymmetrical dress — not a very typical Hathaway choice, if you ask me. While the dress was definitely an unexpected choice for the Oscar-winning actress, she wore it with confidence and poise.

When I think of Hathaway's style, I think of straight or A-line dresses, soft pastels or metallic colors, and very fitted or flowing silhouettes. She is a classic beauty whose style is typically pretty and feminine. But her choice of dress last night didn't exactly fit the image I had of her in my head. While she looked happy and gorgeous, the dress was very much an odd choice.

The dress featured an an asymmetrical silhouette, a fitted waist, and one long sleeve, plus a revealing leg slit and mesh material on the bodice. If you look at it with a closer eye you can see that it also has intricate beading, feathers along the bottom hem, sparkling sequins, a nude mesh strap on the right, a brooch at the waist, and a leopard pattern on the skirt.

I could probably name a million more details on this dress, but I think you already get my point. The look is pretty, especially from a far, but it's got so. much. going. on. It's busy with details, intricacies, and unique characteristics. Frankly, I think it's a little too much.

There's no doubt that Hathaway looks stunning, even if the dress is super busy. Her hair is impeccably styled, and her makeup is on point. I absolutely love her shoes and her boxy clutch. But for someone whose style seems so simple and easy, this dress is a little overwhelming.

Just so you can what I'm talking about, here's a snap of the back.

Maybe this is the start of her taking more sartorial risks? I definitely would never have guessed that Hathaway would rock this dress on a red carpet.

With all that said, this isn't the first the actress has worn something completely and totally unexpected for an event. Even though some of us want to think she's still the Princess of Genovia, in real life, she's a person with ever-evolving tastes.

In honor of her risk with this Rodarte dress, here are nine other interesting sartorial choices the actress has made.

1. Met Ball 2015

See what I mean about metallic colors? Even with the pretty gold tone of this gown, the hood and cap sleeves make it quite a stand-out.

2. Interstellar Premiere

Another busy dress, but this time in a shorter silhouette. It's very pretty, and I love how the dress looks like two different pieces put together.

3. Grey Goose Event, 2014

A military inspired suit? You rock it, Hathaway.

4. Ella Enchanted Premiere, 2004

I think Hathaway's caption says it all.

5. White Fairy Tale Love Ball, 2011

Maybe a little too reminiscent of The Princess Diaries? Or prom in the earlly '00s?

6. Les Miserables Premiere, 2012

Now that is a gown. Those revealed shoulders, the long line of the skirt, that embellished neckline.

7. Sex And The City Season 5 Premiere, 2002

If this crop top and midi skirt combination doesn't qualify as a risk, then I don't know what does.
