These Emma Roberts Characters Are Totally The Same

by Courtney Lindley

This week, Ryan Murphy’s highly-anticipated black comedy Scream Queens , starring Emma Roberts, finally premiered — and to no surprise, the episode completely killed it (all of the puns intended). A large portion of the show's likability can be attributed to its leading lady Roberts, who plays Chanel Oberlin, mercilessly and without morals — but in the best, most fascinating way possible. She's basically Kim Walker from Heathers, but to the tenfold, and with a heavy dose of faux fur and pop culture quips. As a character, Chanel is both awful and awfully entertaining. Judging by the premiere episode, this is going to be a huge career catapult for Roberts, and I'm excited to see where it all takes her. But, is Roberts' new character anything like her previous roles?

For instance: It did get me thinking about the actresses' first role in the television business. Back in 2004, Roberts starred in Nickelodeon's Unfabulous, which centered around the life of 14 year old Addie Singer. She was your typical young teenage girl — she wore braces, wrote songs, had obsessive crushes, and dealt with cliques at school — and that's probably why I loved her so much. And, stay with me here — she was actually a lot like Chanel Oberlin.

I know, I know: Addie Singer might seem like a far cry from her current role as Chanel Oberlin, but Addie had some edge to her as well. She might be an incredibly tame version of Chanel, but these two characters have more in common than you might think.

1. They Both Have Style

Addie Singer had some bold fashion choices (even for 2004), but Chanel Oberlin definitely brings it. There's so much pattern mixing and matching and just all around chicness, it's enough to make you scream. In a good way.

2. They Both Have Sass

There's no doubt that Chanel has an attitude, but that's what makes her character so compelling. Though Addie was definitely no Chanel Oberlin when it came to spunk, she knew how to bring the sass every once and a while — like when she stood up to her arch nemesis, Maris.

3. They Both Have A Way With Words

Addie Singer is a songstress, so she knows how to compose a catchy tune. Chanel on the other hand, delivered some of the best one-liners of the Scream Queens premiere.

4. They Both Know How To Throw A Party

As president of Kappa Kappa Tau, Chanel must know how to throw good parties. In Season 1, Episode 1 of Unfabulous, Addie hosts what was basically the most epic party of her seventh grade year.

5. They Are Both Hopeless Romantics At Heart (... Sort Of)

Addie basically spends her entire time in middle school pining over Jake Behari, and Chanel is obsessed with her terrible boyfriend, Chad.

6. They Both Have A Squad

Although Chanel's squad is composed of "mignons," Addie has a more democratic relationship with her BFFs.

If anything, the similarities between Roberts's two television egos prove her talent as an actress. I have a feeling that Roberts' has a life long career ahead of her — even if she's facing a killer on Scream Queens.
