‘Mockingjay, Part 2’ Will Be The Saddest Movie Yet

by Emily Lackey

OK, guys, we need to talk about the final trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2. Because, while everyone is starting to pre-order tickets and anticipate how many pumps of butter they’ll put on their popcorn, I’m over here stocking up on tissues and practicing my silent sob after watching that trailer. Why? Simply because the trailer just made it clear that Mockingjay, Part 2 is going to be the saddest Hunger Games movie yet. Mark my words.

How can I be so sure? Well, for one, I read the book, so I know what’s coming. But, even if you’re blissfully unaware of what is about to go down (bless your little heart), one look at the latest and final trailer for Mockingjay, Part 2 is enough to convince anyone that this film is going to be a tearjerker. I mean, did you see that opening scene? SO MUCH FORESHADOWING.

But, that’s really only the beginning of what makes this movie look like the saddest Hunger Games movie yet. Just take a look at some the very blatant clues — one glance through these and you’ll be convinced as much as I am that this movie is going to depress the hell out of all of us.

1. It Starts With A Wedding

Anything that starts with a wedding is either, one, doomed to sadness, or two, only going to get worse. Not to mention, weddings make me cry my eyes out. So, basically you’re telling me that even when this movie is happy, I am going to be hysterically crying? Great. Wonderful. Can’t wait.

2. That Very Long, Very Telling Hug

I just can’t handle all the sister love and sister loss. I just can’t. That long hug and that long “I love you” seems like some depressing foreshadowing to me, and I don’t like it at all. Not one little bit.

3. All Of Those Explosions

Nothing happy could come from that.

4. That White Rose

That symbolizes death, I just know it. Or, like, it’s the flower she’s going to lay on someone’s coffin.

5. The Music

Those slow piano notes and all of those violins that sound like they are literally weeping? I may as well just attach handkerchiefs to my chin to catch all of the tears.

6. The Sense Of Unity

Am I the only one who is a total sucker for people rising up and coming together to fight for a common cause? It gives me chills and just about instantly makes me burst into tears.

7. Peeta’s Face

It’s, like, the saddest face ever. You know him coming out of his brainwashed state is going to be devastating.

8. Losing People Along The Way

One of Katniss’ tribe literally disintegrates after running through a beam of light in one scene — if that’s any indication of how quickly we’re going to have to process people’s deaths in this movie, then I’m counting on this being a pretty traumatic viewing experience.

9. The Love Triangle

Only one man can win Katniss’ heart, and the fact that I am rooting for both of them — and how unlikely that is to actually happen (maybe they’ll become polygamists?) — means that, either way, I am going to be a mess when one of them has their heart broken.

I think the most we can hope for after a trailer like this is a happy ending. I’m crossing my fingers for a little ray of sunshine at the end. Maybe Katniss babies?

COME ON, KATNISS BABIES.
