Students at Elon University teamed up and raised money to send an adorable elderly lady to Disney World. Kathryn Thompson has worked on-campus at the Acorn coffee shop at the university for the past 10 years, and has always dreamed of taking her family to Disney World. Two students struck up a conversation with her while buying coffee, and Thompson described her dream to the girls, totally unaware that they would team up (they'd never met before) to make that dream a reality. I don't know what the norm is in college these days, but when I was in college, I wasn't making any longstanding employees' dreams come true, and I'm feeling pretty guilty now. Maybe if I had consumed more coffee things it would've worked out differently.
Anyway, the two girls started a GoFundMe campaign to raise enough money for Kathryn to take her son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons to Disney World. (By the way, if you want to get your tears on, all you have to do is read the comments on the GoFundMe page, because they're tear jerkers.) The girls estimated $6,000, and managed to raise $6,500 in three days. They speculated that it took so little time because Kathryn, and the Acorn coffee shop, are two campus favorites.
The girls gave Kathryn the gift, promising her that the only thing left to do was to set a date for the trip! They presented her with Disney shirts for the whole family (which someone had specifically donated), and a poster of the GoFundMe page, including all the touching comments students and faculty had written about Kathryn.
Kathryn Was, Understandably, Completely Overcome
Not only did the entire student body come together for her, but she's going to have a hell of a time surprising her family with the trip.
And The Girls Were Thrilled To Show Her The Gifts
They're already rockin' their Mickey T-shirts, as Kathryn soon will be. (Oh, and the GoFundMe page now has over $8,000 in donations.)
