How Ariana Grande's Makeup Artist Preps Her Skin

by Alexa Tucker

Ari's beauty game is consistently on point, so it's no wonder that her makeup artist has some great tips up his sleeve. Daniel Chinchilla spilled the secrets behind Ariana Grande's perfect makeup to WMagazine.com, and his techniques are simpler than you'd expect from the man behind the masterpiece. One thing he says makes a huge impact: Prepping the skin with primer.

"Your makeup is nothing without good primer," says Chinchilla, divulging his most sage advice. "Even though it’s a couple of extra steps, it’s going to make a world of difference in how your makeup stays on." Especially for a pop star, who has to take the stage or appear at events for long hours (and is expected to look ***flawless the entire time.)

While he also recommends layering makeup to help it stay put, simply adding primer to your beauty routine is a much more natural approach for those of us who don't spend hours in front of cameras or under stage lights on the daily.

As I primer devotee, I'm in complete agreement with Chinchilla, and there's no need to stop at just your skin — eyelashes, eyelids, and lips can all benefit from prepping products. No need to go out and buy a lip primer if you're not feeling it, though; you might have the perfect one without even knowing it. "I fill in the whole lip with the liner and then apply the lipstick on top," says Chinchilla. "It gives your lipstick a base, like a primer." See? Primer is key, in all of its forms.

Take it from the man in charge of one of music's most immaculate faces.

Here are five primers to consider adding to your routine:

Smashbox Photo Finish

Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Primer, $36, Sephora

"I love the Smashbox primers," says Chinchilla. And for good reason: They're a cult fave, and people love 'em for their smooth, silky finish.

Too Faced Primed And Poreless

Too Faced Primed And Poreless Skin Smoothing Face Primer, $30, Sephora

This primer gives your makeup something to adhere too with being sticky.

Rimmel Stay Matte Primer

Rimmel Stay Matte Primer, $7, drugstore

Rimmel's primers are considered among the best beauty products on drugstore shelves.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $22, Sephora

Eyelid primer is the best way to prevent shadow from creasing, especially for oily skin types.

NYX Cosmetics Big & Loud Eyelash Primer

Nyx Cosmetics Big & Loud Eyelash Primer, $5, Ulta

Find your mascara flaking or rubbing off during the day? Eyelash primer can fix that.
