Menswear isn't for everyone. It's always a "win" when actress Julia Roberts rocks the trend. You know who else kills it when she does menswear? That would be Rihanna, who rocked menswear in her tour announcement photo. The singer went quiet on social media for about a month but returned this week. She posted a photo promoting her upcoming tour, wearing a suit jacket with squared off, statement shoulders and braids in her hair.
A month ago, Rihanna took the stage in a loose-fitting suit and bra top, which reminded me of "Vogue"-era Madonna. In late August, the singer wore a pink gingham suit, offering a fairly feminine take on menswear. So she has been playing with the trend for much of the late summer and fall, at least when she has been visible.
Rihanna will be very much in our faces when she hits the road on the Anti Tour this February. But as for her announcement photo? It was yet another example of Rihanna twisting her look, offering her own unique take on a trend, and blowing us all away in the process.
She paired a dark blazer with geometric shoulders with a white shirt and bare, squoval nails. Her hair was fixed in about a dozen braids. It was supremely dramatic.
As stated many times before, menswear is a tricky trend that often requires some feminine touches. The blazer had an almost reverse triangle shape. Rihanna added long nails and dark lips to her styling here. She was gloriously androgynous.
That Madonna-inspired stage outfit I mentioned prior? It was sexy thanks to the cami top and the pinstripes.
Rihanna also wore a baggy suit at the 2015 Grammys while performing with Paul McCartney and Kanye West. The suit didn't have much shape but that's OK. Rihanna's smile and that blinged out necklace were the beacons of light.
She was a vision in white a few years ago. She was also quite the redhead with those fire engine locks.
Clearly, Rihanna does not avoid the menswear trend. She attacks it... like Julia Roberts attacks it.
Now that we've seen what Rihanna is wearing in her tour promo announcement, I cannot wait to see what she rocks while on the stage itself. I expect blazers and trousers to be factored into the array of fabulous and sexy ensembles that she dons throughout the show.
