Madi Davis Is Team Pharrell's Only Hope

by Jessica Molinari

And then there was one. Team Pharrell is down to it's final artist in Madi Davis — but she may be just what he needs to stay in this game another week. The 16-year-old — seriously, I can't believe this girl is that young — sang an emotional, stripped down version of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and completely slayed it. It was raw, powerful, and totally semi-final worthy.

Davis has given stellar performances week after week, but this one really stuck out. She was able to totally break down one of the most popular songs of all time and make it all her own. Her version of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" represented everything she is as an artist — strong, mysterious, and unexpected. Her cover was truly worthy of being it's own single, and deserves a spot on her first album.

Davis is unique in this competition. She's intense and mysterious – which is really intriguing to the audience. Though she hasn't revealed much of her personality to her fans, they still patiently await her performances every week and reward her by sending her through to the next round.

Though this is what makes Davis unique, it's also what is going to hurt her in this game. The top artists so far are those who have really opened themselves up to the audience and revealed their true colors. Contestants like Amy Vachal, Emily Ann Roberts and Jordan Smith use their music to show the audience exactly who they are and that's why fans rave about them. Davis, on the other hand, seems to almost hide behind her music instead of using it to express herself. If she's able to overcome this in the short time before the finale, she may have a chance in continuing on this game. But if she can't, it will be her fatal flaw.
