Kylie Jenner's Social Media Self Vs. Her Real Self

by Caitlyn Callegari

Let's get real here for a minute. As a collective whole, social media users, are not the people they present themselves to be. Case in point, in an interview with Interview Magazine, Kylie Jenner talks about being "flashy" for social media, even though that isn't how she is in her day to day life. I give her credit for her candidness. After all, us non-famouses definitely aren't the free spirited foodies and travelers we pretend to be, either.

Honestly, I do find Jenner's social media presence a bit strange considering the more subdued girl I was presented with in interviews and, especially in her teenage years, on Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Not that the youngest of the Kardashian family doesn't have her bright and silly moments, but she definitely didn't appear as outgoing as she seems on her Snapchat and Instagram, and now I know why.

She told Interview,

I’m way flashier on Instagram and Snapchat, because I feel like that’s what people want to see and that’s what I’ve always done, so I’m not going to stop. People want to see my cars and my purses. People love fashion. But that’s so not me.

Here are some instances where, as she says, Jenner's "flashy" social media life is greatly juxtaposed to how she actually is:

For Instance, Showing Off Her Goods

A prime example of her, "showing off her cars and purses."

And Promoting Her Product

Here she seems super outgoing and bubbly.

But Then, Compare That To Her Demure Interview With Ellen DeGeneres

Jenner is straight forward and exact while being personable. She isn't posing or goofing around, which can be attributed partially to the interview subject material, but here she seems a lot more mature than I think she is usually given credit for.

She's Constantly Fashionable Selfie-ing

As is the Kardashian standard.

Or Modeling For Snapchat

Something like that proves self-assuredness, right?

And Casually Taking Pics In Front Of Private Jets Looking Like A Supermodel

It kind of doesn't get flashier than this.

But, Then There's This KUWTK Clip Shining A Light On Her "Insecurities"

When, before this, none of us probably assumed she had any.

She Looks To Be Having Some Snapchat Fun Getting Silly And Regal

I mean, the effects are pretty cool.

And Isn't Shy About Giving Us A Glitzy Shot Of Her Bejeweled Hand

Definitely not what I imagine a picture captioned, "a u s t r a l i a," would look like.

She's Also Generous On The Sophisticated Selfie Front

She does looks fab.

But All Of That Social Media Build Up Is Knocked Down When You See Her Dealing With Her Fear Of Being In The Public Eye

It's easy to see the Kardashian-Jenner family as well-trained celebrities devoid of feelings. But if you can watch Jenner drown in the sea of publicity and not feel somewhat empathetic, then you aren't seeing her for more than her selfies.

Clearly, Jenner's confession to Interview holds weight as evidenced by her drastically different demeanor when it's not social media meditated. I guess the lesson in this is that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Or, you know, a celebrity by their Instagram.
