Just What Is The Lampshading Trend?

by Rosie W.

Enter a new term in the fashion lexicon: lampshading, the next big trend in street style. Via Popsugar, TheSkimm has finally coined a term for the look that celebrities from Kendall Jenner to Zendaya have been slaying. According to TheSkimm, lampshading is "apparently what you call wearing an oversized T-shirt that covers up your Nike shorts (norts), making you look like a lamp shade. It's how your cousin in college says, 'I woke up like this.'" Basically lampshading is a laid-back, chic way to play with the oversized silhouettes that are totally in this season.

If you're still stuck on the lampshading fence, allow me to present evidence as to why you should try it out as soon as possible. First, although the term is not particularly alluring, lampshading epitomizes the sporty-sexy look. Case in point: Kourtney Kardashian recently paired an oversized sweater with thigh-high boots, leaving just a smidgen of thigh exposed, and the result was sexy without the added worry about a wardrobe malfunction. Lampshading is totally versatile between seasons, too — Kendall Jenner rocked the look with an oversized Givenchy tee and ankle-high boots that would be perfectly suited for hot summer days. Add to the roster Zendaya, who took lampshading to the small screen in an interview with 106 & Park, and you've got a bona fide trend.

So, if you're up for trying out the lampshading trend, scroll down to see how I would rock the trend on campus, at a holiday party (remember: no holiday party is worth going to unless it is tacky), and on the street. True to TheSkimm's definition, I've paired each look with a corresponding gym short for security, but it's not necessary if you're comfortable with the length of your lampshade. Let's get started:

The Sporty Lampshade

Topshop Floppy Felt Hat, $48, nordstrom.com; Blukey Sweater, $110, yoox.com; Nike Sportswear Gym Vintage Shorts, $44.95, hypedc.com; Cross Body Bag With Tassel, $16.70, chicnova.com; Blondo Snow Waterproof Boots, $325, zappos.com

Trendy accessories do a lot to dress up an oversized sweater; I'm loving the hat and crossbody bag here for their laid-back vibe. Also, can I get a hand for waterproof boots?

The (Tacky) Holiday Lampshade

Ransom Long-Sleeve Holiday Sweater Junior Plus, $25, jcpenny.com; Stella McCartney Ellie Leaping Printed Stretch-Silk Pajama Shorts, $25, theoutnet.com; Dolci Gioie Christmas Wreath Earrings, $89, forzieri.com; Whiting & Davis Art Deco Gold Mesh Purse, $68, chairish.com; Journee Collection Magic Wide Calf Knee-High Boots, $95, jcpenny.com

Lampshading is the new way to wear a tacky Christmas sweater without feeling totally over-the-top.

The Chic Lampshade

MIH JEANS Oversized striped merino wool sweater, £87.75, theoutnet.com; OASIS Velvet Short, £38, oasis.com; House of Harlow 1960 The Temple Necklace, $58.00, shopbop.com; Marc By Marc Jacobs Bracelet, $93, yoox.com; NLY Thigh High Open Toe Boot, £54.95, nelly.com

This look is cute and super comfortable... if you can walk in heels.
