7 Travel Beauty Hacks That Will Save Your Makeup

by Jessica Willingham

Traveling can be hard when you have enough beauty and makeup products to fill an entire moving van. How do you choose? And once you've narrowed down the line-up, how do you keep them from breaking or leaking everywhere? Here are the best travel beauty hacks for the next time you find yourself having to stuff your beauty cabinet into a bag.

When I'm traveling, I have some key concerns. First, I never know what or how much I can pack. Second, I've learned that suitcases are where makeup goes to die. Compacts break, bottles leak, and things get lost. Lastly, I've found that your skincare routine (or even upping the ante when traveling) is really important. Stress, indulgences, and airplane air can make skin act crazy.

From my experience, I've learned that less is more, when it comes to traveling and beauty. To simply things, I think it's best to have a go-to look you can stick to every day so you only need to pack those products.

I rounded up some of the most useful beauty traveling hacks I’ve learned over the years. They’ve definitely changed how I travel and what my beauty routine is like on the road or in the air. Here are my favorite hacks for a stress-free traveling beauty experience.

1. Take Only Double (Or Triple) Duty Products

Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Matte Bronzer, $28, Sephora

I love traveling with matte bronzers, because they double as a transitional eyeshadow shade. Cream blushes can double as lip stains, and vice versa. Get creative to cut down on your luggage. Who knows, you may find a new favorite technique.

2. Utilize Your Sample Products

A subscription box is great for travel-sized, TSA-approved products like moisturizers and shadows.

3. Use Mascara As Eyeliner

L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Waterproof Mascara, $6, Amazon

You heard me. In a pinch (or if you don't feel like packing it all), you can use your mascara as an eyeliner. Bump it against your lash lines for a smudged look that is perfect for a smoky eye.

4. Don't Bring The Whole Bottle

Contact Lens Case, $5, Walgreens

If you're only going for a day or two, use a contact lens case to hold foundation and primer. You don't want to risk losing an expensive foundation, or worse, risking it busting mid-flight all over your clothes.

5. Wear Lipstick As Blush (& Vice Versa)

Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Cheek & Lip Stain, $30, Sephora

Again, the more your product can use in different ways, the better. Packing less product allows you to have a "beauty uniform" when traveling, cutting down the time and stress it might take to pick what lipstick shade you want to wear. Plus, these beauties will give you a gorgeous monochromatic look.

6. Pack Coconut Oil

Spectrum Naturals Organic Coconut Oil, $11, Amazon

Instead of packing moisturizer, conditioner, cuticle oil and serum, use an all-in-one product like coconut oil to stay hydrated. But don't take the whole jar, of course — scoop some into a handy travel-sized bottle.

7. Place A Cotton Pad In Your Compacts

Ulta Premium Cotton Pads, $5, Ulta

Place a cotton pad in your blush and bronzer compacts to prevent the worse of all beauty fouls — cracked product. With this extra cushion for protection, they will live to see tomorrow.
