Every Spice Girls Reunion Rumor From 2015

by Mary Grace Garis

I'm not saying you can dust off your platform sneakers just yet, but I am saying you might want to get ready to spice up your life. In an appearance on the U.K.'s Alan Carr's New Year's Spectacular Mel B remarked hinted that the fab five (or at least four of the fab five) might be reuniting. Before you get too excited for the Spice Girls' 20th anniversary tour, slow down, wait. I've listened to this song before — this is like the fifth time I've heard the Spice Girls may be reuniting this year. I mean, if 2016 is the year of the Spice Girl reunion, 2015 will definitely be known as the year of Spice Girl reunion rumors.

The former (current? I don't know if you ever retire from being a Spice Girl?) Scary Spice didn't really confirm anything, and was quick to acknowledge she felt like the one instigating all the rumors. "To be serious, it is our 20th anniversary this year, and it would be rude not to celebrate," she said. "So hopefully something will be happening pretty soon… I can't tell you what it is yet."

... yeah, that sounds vague enough for us to be skeptic. Of course my ears perk each time I hear of a potential reunion, but I don't know how much my heart can take at this point. So before you get too excited yourself, allow me to recap all the talk of reunions we heard this year.

March 2015: Baby Spice Says All Systems Go... If The Others Climb Aboard

In an interview with Now! Magazine, Emma Bunton (aka my fav forever, Baby Spice) was asked if the gang would get back together for the 20th anniversary of "Wannabe." The good news is that she's keen on the idea. The bad news is that she has to assemble the rest of the Avengers:

We love each other and we love performing together... It's just when the timing is right because we all have our own careers now and we have families, it's just about getting five schedules together and that's all it is.

It all sounds decidedly positive until you remember that Victoria Beckham (who was/is Posh Spice, lest we forget) isn't eager to return to the group following the Olympics. As early as January 2014, it had been reported that Posh had given her blessing for the girls to go tour without her, but, like, would you really spend $300 to see four for the five Spice Girls? I mean, maybe, I don't know your life. It's a hard sell for me, personally.

May 2015: The Spice Girls Reunite!... Except Not Really, And With Eva Longoria

Seeing the phrase "Spice Girls reunite for David Beckham's birthday" pop up in your newsfeed inevitably gave your inner child a heart attack. It's a fake out, though. In fact, four Spice Girls were in attendance to Beckham's birthday, one of them being, you know, Mrs. Beckham, and a former Desperate Housewife replaced Scary Spice. At this point, your inner child deflated with disappointment, but perk up, kid: isn't it encouraging that the girls are at least staying in contact?

October 2015: Hey, Maybe We'll Go On Tour With The Backstreet Boys, IDK

This rumor was a personal high point for me, because Millennium was the first CD I ever bought, so there was the gentlest whisper-scream of "yaaaaaaas" happening on my end. In an interview with Rolling Stone, BSB A.J. McLean dropped the bomb that a Spice Girls/Backstreet Boys joint tour had been in the works for a while now. “The Spice Girls tour has been this idea bouncing around for the past year and a half, and it’s something we’re still talking about,” were his exact words. Whaaaaaaat...?

There really isn't much to say on that front, though, except that, um... I have yet to see this come to fruition.

November 2015: The Spice Girls Are Reuniting, "Wait, What?" Says The Spice Girls

Cut to last month, when The Sun reports that The Spice Girls — or at least four of them — are in the talks for their 20th anniversary reunion tour, holding secret meetings around London et al. Sounds great... until news catches up to Baby Spice and she tells us to pump the breaks. "If anything happens and it's concrete, and we decide on something, I will let you know, but nothing's happening at the moment," she said on her radio breakfast show. Mel C (that is, Sporty Spice) followed suit, tweeting, "Woke up this morning wondering whether I need to start practising my backflips???!!!" Sigh.

And that leads us back to here. Ultimately, kids, I think it's very plausible that the girls will be back again, if only because nostalgia bolsters ticket prices like nothing else. Just take each rumor with a grain of salt until something is definitively confirmed... and those platform sneakers in your closet until then.
