Are Taylor Swift's Videos Telling Us Something?

by Michelle Lulic

Gearing up for 2016 also means gearing up for the premiere of Taylor Swift's "Out of the Woods" music video. However, it could also mean that Swift — like many other celebrities that have come before her — is looking to move her image in yet another direction. Or at least that's the vibe I'm starting to get from her latest 1989 music videos. Upon her latest sneak peak at the "Out of the Woods" music video, my theory is just getting stronger: Taylor Swift wants to be an action star.

Just think about it. A few years ago, Swift was the ideal country girl. She had her classic curly hair, her cowboy boots, her guitar, and her countless number of Country Music Awards. But, at the end of 2014, everything changed. Swift released her first-ever pop album, 1989, and continued to dominate the pop market for all of 2015. Today, she is nominated for seven 2016 Grammy Awards, attends red carpets with her all-star squad, and rocks a short, straight blonde bob with bangs. She's gotten straight up edgy, and I kind of love it. But is there a reason for all of this dramatic change — aside from just her blossoming as an artist?

OK, I know that might sounds bizarre to you! But, are you even looking at the photo above?! She looks gritty, dirty, and ready to run. Sound familiar? The whole badass image began ages ago in the murderous "Blank Space" music video, and it definitely continued in her "Bad Blood" music video. There really seems to be a pattern developing. Could Taylor Swift be looking to make the singer-to-actor jump that Justin Timberlake made? Let's not forget that Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg were once in the music industry as well, before moving to become major action and drama stars. In fact, Swift has already started to gain some of her own footing.

Swift's career actually first started to blossom in the form of acting. In 2009, the singer guest-starred on an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She also studied acting in New York City before her family moved down to Tennessee for her music — and took part in musical productions such as "Grease" and "The Sound of Music." Her most recent roles include bit parts in movies such as Valentine's Day and The Giver. Plus, she's even said to have auditioned for a major role in Les Miserables. Overall, she's actually not that bad of an actor.

Her latest music videos are starting to feel more and more like mini-movies (I'm talking posters, IMDB pages, and everything), and they all seem to point in one general direction: Taylor Swift is ready to take on some kind of thriller or action movie. Honestly, I don't know how I'd feel about Swift being the latest "Bond Girl" or anything, but she sure does look the part. An action movie casting announcement at this point wouldn't be the least bit shocking. We'll just have to wait, and see what 2016 has in store.
