John Boyega Teases Finn's Role In 'Episode VIII'

by Michelle Lulic

One of the most memorable moments in the film was when Finn took hold of Luke Skywalker's lightsaber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Not only was that moment confusing, but it also started making us think that the Force may have been strong with the former Stormtrooper as well as Rey. And now, the Force is telling me that the fan speculation may be something we really shouldn't ignore. Or, maybe that's just John Boyega's recent interview with Vogue UK that's telling me that? As the breakout star discussed the success of the franchise with the magazine, he proudly spoke up about all that happened in Episode VII. But he also was sure to spill a few beans regarding what we can expect in Episode VIII, and that's where words that were seemingly innocent started to feel not so innocent anymore.

Let me put it this way. When asked about the script for Episode VIII, all that Boyega shared was this: "It's great. Much darker, but we're very excited." But he then went on to say this: "My part in the next film will be much more physical so I might be in the gym a bit more." ...OK, call me crazy, but those two short sentences actually say a lot. How? Well, if Finn wasn't a Jedi, what would require him to be more physically active than he already was in The Force Awakens? I mean, he was running from explosions and fighting battles in Episode VII. Isn't that physically challenging enough? More training is really making me think that Jedi training is what he is talking about.

However, aside from just the prospect of Finn undergoing Jedi training, his interview also says something about the overall future of the franchise as well (not just in regards to his character). As Boyega shared, the next film is going to be "Much darker." So — and I know this is a bit of a stretch — does that mean that Finn's character is going to be much darker? As in... a part of the dark side? Or is Kylo Ren just going to become way worse than he is right now? With The Force Awakens ending on a happy and hopeful note, these words must mean that something totally unexpected is about to happen. Whether Finn is a part of that or not... well, that's extremely unclear. But the suspicion still exists.

As for right now, all we can do to find out what's going to happen next is wait. All of the fan theories circling around will just make us think a little bit harder. And Star Wars stars? I will happily dissect every word you say. Because the struggle until May 26, 2017 is real.
