'Daredevil's Elektra Is The New Antihero To Watch
Are you just as excited about season two of Daredevil as I am? No? Well, you should be, because there's an all-new bad-ass female character in the television Marvel Universe. That's right: Daredevil Season 2 is coming in even stronger than you may have imagined with its higher levels of serious girl power. With Daredevil's introduction of Elektra — played by The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo actress Elodie Yung — I have a feeling that Daredevil is about to get itself on the same level as Jessica Jones when it comes to complex female characters. Especially since Daredevil's co-executive producers, Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie, revealed some juicy new information regarding what we can expect from Elektra in Season 2 at the Television Critics Association panel for the popular Netflix-based Marvel show on Sunday, January 17. And, honestly, if anyone is more excited than me about this right now, it's probably Elodie Yung herself.
“[The producers and I] think Elektra is kind of a sociopath. This world is a game for her, like a chess game. What motivates her is what she wants, she’ll use anything she needs to use to get to her goal, and if she needs to kill people she would," explains Yung at the panel discussion, "On the other hand, we wanted to create a character with different layers… I think Elektra isn’t a bad person, she’s not a good person, she’s a person with different traits.” Yes, that is a whole lot of human-based complexity you just read.
And that's not the end of it! Ramirez and Pretrie also shared a (still hidden from the public) clip from Season 2 of Daredevil at the panel, and it certainly wasn't lacking Elektra. As the clip was described by Deadline as showing, "Elektra and Matt Murdock engaged in a tense discussion, after Elektra breaks into Murdock’s apartment," in which there is, "palpable history between the two characters," and "years of lingering heartache and regret on both their parts." Ramirez then went on to confirm that fans can also expect one kick-ass costume to match, and that the decisions about it were made while focusing in on, “what looks cool, how much do we love the comics, and can we do that."
Basically, Elektra is turning out to be everything I hoped she could be. She's strong, complicated, and will look like a total superhero costume-wise. But can she ever really compare to Krysten Ritter's portrayal of Jessica Jones? Honestly, I don't believe they can be compared. However, combining two female superheroes into one show sure sounds nice, right? Good thing it's totally possible... maybe. Considering it's already been confirmed that Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will be coming together in the show The Defenders later this year, one can only hope that Elektra will be in the mix as well. An Elektra and Jessica Jones team-up (or feud?) would be absolutely amazing.
For now, we just have to pump ourselves up for Netflix's premiere of Daredevil Season 2, which will be airing in its entirety on Friday, March 18.
