by Nuzha Nuseibeh

Three people have been reported killed after gunfire erupted in a Columbia, Maryland, shopping mall Saturday morning, according to the Howard County Police Department's Twitter account. Authorities are saying that a man opened fire on the second floor of the large shopping center in Howard County, with officials reportedly calling for mass casualty units. Some people have reported fleeing the building after hearing the shots fired, while others inside the mall are reporting that the building is on lock-down.

More details have yet to emerge, but the police department tweeted that a call was made to 911 around 11:15 a.m. local time, saying that shots were fired at the Mall. Policemen then went in and found three people dead, including "one found near a gun and ammunition."

"Three people confirmed dead at Columbia Mall. Victims unknown at this time," the department tweeted.

The shooting comes only a day after a 20-year-old student was killed in a shooting at South Carolina State University. Only earlier this week, a shooting at Purdue University left one man dead, and yet another student was critically injured after a shooting at Widener University near Philadelphia.
