Tori Kelly's New Tune Is Empowering

by Alex Kritselis

If you don't know who Tori Kelly is yet, now is the perfect time to find out. On Friday, Tori Kelly re-released her debut album, Unbreakable Smile , with two new songs added to the tracklist: "Hollow" (which premiered in October 2015) and "Something Beautiful" (not to be confused with "Beautiful Things," which is a bonus tune on the LP's deluxe edition). If you've never heard the 23-year-old artist's music before (or you've only heard a few songs, here and there), "Something Beautiful" is a great introduction to what she's all about. Yes, the Tori Kelly "Something Beautiful" lyrics are classic Kelly. That is to say, they're simple, sweet, and inspiring.

In terms of its overall vibe, "Something Beautiful" reminds me quite a bit of Natasha Bedingfield's 2004 hit "Unwritten" — which, as far as I'm concerned, is the gold standard when it comes to inspirational pop tunes. In the song's first verse, Kelly sings, "Know you're hurting and you feel like all is lost / Heart is burning from the love that's been cut off / But daylight's come in and time for you is all I got / And I'll promise you'll get through this, you can do this."

"'Cause all that you need / Is a little room to breathe," the "Nobody Love" hit-maker proclaims on the pre-chorus. Then, the instrumental swells, and she shows off her gorgeous voice on the empowering hook: "Breathe in and let it go, oh / Your tears are not for nothin' / Let 'em fall, oh / In every tear drop there is something beautiful, oh / You are stronger than you know / Oh, you're something beautiful." Check it out below.

If you like what you hear, Unbreakable Smile is available everywhere now. And be sure to tune into the 2016 Grammys on Mon., Feb. 15! According to Fuse, Ke lly will sing a duet with fellow Best New Artist nominee James Bay. If the upcoming performance is anything like Kelly's past award show appearances (like her killer rendition of "Should've Been Us" at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, for instance), you won't want to miss it.
