Johnny Depp to Win...Make-Up Award?

by Erin Mayer

Looking good in guyliner is now enough to earn you high esteem. Or it is for Johnny Depp at least. This month, he will be the first-ever recipient of the Distinguished Artisan award, a new honor presented by the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild to an actor "who has made particularly artistic collaborations with hair and makeup specialists" throughout their career.

That's right, Depp is getting an award for looking hot in weird makeup. Unfair. Where's my award for wearing crazy eyeliner? I've been waiting... but seriously, if there is anyone who deserves an award for wearing makeup well, it's Depp.

From the title role in Edward Scissorhands to Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean and the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, Depp has been totally transformed time and again for the sake of his characters. Guild president Susan Cabral-Ebert released a statement saying:

He, probably more than any other actor working today, uses the skills of our members to delineate his characters. Depp has constantly been an outstanding supporter of our crafts, ultimately respectful and appreciative of our members' abilities and generous with his creative collaboration. A great artist himself, he allows others to shine.

She actually has a point. Depp's commitment to layers of face paint and crazy hairstyles highlights his commitment to the craft of acting. It's part of what makes him so convincing in whatever projects he takes on. Which is why I continue to love him — even if I have not forgiven him for letting Winona go, and probably never will. Oh well, I'll always have this:

And Depp will always have this award, which he will receive on February 15 at the Guild awards ceremony, taking place at Paramount studios. Congrats, Johnny! You make Gene Simmons jealous of how great you look in white face paint.
