Channing Tatum in 'X-Men'?

by Tanya Ghahremani

Channing Tatum has played a pretty wide variety of roles during his time in Hollywood: He was a dancer from the wrong side of the tracks in Step Up, a dim-witted undercover cop in 21 Jump Street, a male stripper in Magic Mike, and a heartbroken soldier in Dear John — but could superhero be next? Possibly: According to Indiewire, X-Men movie producer Lauren Shuler Donner has revealed that Channing Tatum may be set to portray Gambit in an upcoming standalone X-Men film for Marvel, if all goes according to plan.

"I'm dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum," she revealed to Empire Online in an interview. "That doesn't have to be a great big movie. It's a thief in New Orleans, it's a whole different story. He's on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He's such a sweetheart."

Could this actually happen? Screenrant says yes: At a White House Down press event last year, when asked about the possibility of playing Gambit, Tatum had the following to say:

I would like to play Gambit. Gambit’s my favorite. I’m from New Orleans, around that area. My dad’s from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real. No knock on Taylor Kitsch [who played the character in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'], though, ’cause I actually like his Gambit, but I’ve always lived around Cajun people. [...] Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking [guy]. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He’s a thief. He kind of rode the line.

If it happens, it's likely the budget would be kept smaller than a major film like the upcoming X-Men: Days Of Future Past, since Gambit is considered a less central character in the universe. But still, that could be good! And the idea of Tatum as Gambit is certainly an intriguing one...
