Who Is Zayn Malik's "It's You" About?

by Michelle Lulic

Being in the public eye with One Direction has easily put Zayn Malik's love life at the forefront of news headlines. From his rumored hook-up with Gigi Hadid to his long-term relationship with Perrie Edwards, there hasn't been much that fans haven't somehow known about. Now — with the launch of his own solo music career — I can't help but wonder who or what each of his love-inspired songs has to be about. His latest song, "It's You," off of his solo album, Mind of Mine, has to be the most intriguing one yet. But who is Malik's "It's You" about?

With Gigi Hadid starring in his "Pillowtalk" music video, there really wasn't much being hidden about what (or who) the song could be referring to. However, his sultry premiere performance of "It's You" on Wednesday night's airing of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, gave a clear sense of emotion and meaning behind everything he's singing. And I'm thinking that it could be because the song is about a relationship more personal to him and his past — His relationship with Perrie Edwards. Because with the song's lyrics and first performance, there's no hiding just how personal "It's You" is to Zayn. And, well, a broken engagement with someone tends to have its emotional effects.

The song contains lyrics saying things like "Am I wrong for wanting us to make it?" Zayn is clearly talking about a love that had a chance, but has since been lost. And, from what it sounds like, this wasn't any old relationship. It was one that seemed to have faded over time — despite Zayn originally believing that she was the one ( ..."It's You"). Then, when putting that in comparison with his relationship with Perrie, it all seems to come together. The singing pair got engaged in August of 2013 and split two years after their engagement in Summer 2015.

However, there's another layer to the song "It's You" that really puts Perrie Edwards at the center of my song-topic suspicions. One line that sticks out to me in particular is the one that states, "I looked at it like a blessing. And now it's just a curse." What makes those lines especially relevant? Zayn used 2015 to not only split with Perrie Edwards, but to also split from One Direction, and thus the past year in his life was a time for him to reboot and "start over." That was a that he might have thought was right at the time (in splitting with Perrie Edwards) but also may be looking back at now with a different opinion. If that's the case, then that's part of what's making this song so emotional at its core.

But could there be another woman behind "It's You" aside from Perrie? You never know. There could have been a brief fling in Zayn's life that he once wanted to take seriously, but the feelings weren't mutual. And that can be a less intense but still heart-breaking experience. So, will other songs on the Mind of Mine album help clear up which relationships he's referring to? Possibly. We're just going to have to wait until the album comes out on March 25 to get a deeper look into his psyche.
