Why Selena Gomez’s 2016 Oscars Dress Didn’t Happen

by Maxine Builder

Though Selena Gomez wasn't nominated for an Oscar, she definitely has connections to some of the pictures nominated for the night's biggest prize. But Selena Gomez's 2016 Oscars dress didn't happen because, well, she didn't show up on the red carpet!

Between all of her high-power acting projects and collaborations, along with her recently released album Revival and upcoming tour, it really looks like 2016 is going to be Selena's year. She had a cameo in The Big Short , which is one of the eight films battling for the title of best picture, and she also recently announced on her Twitter she would be working with Tom McCarthy, the director of the Academy Award-nominated Spotlight, on her new Netflix series, even taking a moment to wish McCarthy good luck.

Amid all this buzz, I was pretty stoked for Gomez to show up at Hollywood's biggest night, especially since she's been on a sartorial hot streak recently. Just a couple of weeks ago, Gomez made a splash at the Grammys, showing up with the night's big winner Taylor Swift and wearing a sparkling navy gown from Calvin Klein that was old school glam with a modern twist. She had set the bar high for herself going into Hollywood's biggest night, and sadly, we were robbed of the chance to see Selena slay this red carpet, too.

Though, in retrospect, it makes sense that Gomez didn't show up at this year's Oscars because she's never been to the ceremony, although she has been a regular at the pre- and post-Oscars festivities for the last several years.

Here she is at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party in 2015, wearing a slinky black beaded long-sleeved gown.

And here she is at the same party in 2014, in a sheer golden and embellished gown with a crossed halter.

She clearly loves the Vanity Fair party, because she also went in 2012, in another slinky beaded gown.

If you really want a throwback, here's Gomez and her then-beau Justin Bieber at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party (because that seems to the only way that Gomez spends her Oscars nights) in 2011.

If the last five years are any indication, chances are that Gomez will go to the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party tonight, and she'll probably wear a beaded gown, especially since embellished dresses were everywhere on this year's Oscars red carpet. But really, I long for the day when Gomez will take her sartorial A-game to the Oscars red carpet, not just an after-party or two.
