The occasional teary-eyed runny mascara moment happens every now and then, but if your mascara smudges pretty much 24/7, you can definitely learn how to prevent it. To stop raccoon eye madness, be sure to test out the one thing you need to fix runny mascara. With a quick hop to your favorite makeup shop (or website!), you’ll be good to go in no time.

I first learned just how annoying runny mascara could be back in the early ‘00s when I was rocking pageant girl life. One year, I landed a spot to compete at nationals at Disney World and, let me tell ya, the heat wave struggle was real. It was more or less impossible to keep any of my makeup from totally sliding off, and mascara proved especially difficult. Fortunately, my granny is a master of all things makeup and knew exactly what to do.

The one thing you need to fix runny mascara is powder for under your eyes — more than just my grandma can back up this hack! PopSugar shared, “Skin that’s too hydrated can attract smudges [but] a light dusting of powder around your eyes [will] help suppress oil.”

As for application specifics, celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff told Oprah, “Try a light dusting of loose powder on your eyelids, even getting a bit on your lashes to hold the mascara." Easy enough, right?

Below are three of my favorite sealing powders:

1. Blended Face Powder

Clinique Blended Face Powder, $25, Nordstrom

Clinique's powders are always lightweight and generally friendly to sensitive skin. Plus, this powder doesn't cake at all.

2. Mineral Veil

bareMinerals Mineral Veil, $22, Sephora

This powder is my ultimate under eye brightening pick. It stays in place and stops mascara from even getting the chance to run.

3. Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, $38, Sephora

For a clean and classic setting powder, Laura Mercier is a reliable choice for all skin tones.
