by Sienna Fantozzi

We always want what we don't have. If you have thick hair, you curse it and want it thinner, but if your hair is naturally thin, you covet voluminous, thick locks. It's OK though — you don't have to fight your DNA. There are plenty of ways to fake it until you make it, and I've got some hair thickening secrets only experts know so that this time, it really does work!

There are plenty of reasons to love your thin hair, but sometimes you just want a little boost. You know, a little more volume. You might pop hair vitamins like nobody's business or try various tutorials on YouTube, but sometimes, you just have to go to the experts to find out what's actually going to work, and what's all hype. I interviewed Dani Faraj, Director of Hair at Brighton Salon in Beverly Hills, to find out some insider info for how you can create the illusion of having thicker hair, no matter how thin your hair might be naturally. And not only that, I got to the bottom of the question of if hair supplements actually work, or if you're wasting your money buying all those pills.

If you're in need of some hair thickening secrets, check out these expert-approved tips.

1. Use Extensions

According to Faraj, the best way to fake thicker hair is with extensions — but don't worry, you don't have to go to the salon and spend a ton of money. You can use clip-in extensions yourself at home.

2. Take Supplements

It's not hocus pocus — supplements do work, you just need to take the right ones. "Try using Dr. Perricone Total Skin and Body supplements," says Faraj.

3. Use The Right Products

You might be hurting yourself by choosing the wrong products. If you want thicker looking strands, stick to volumizing products. "Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray is also a great product for thickening. Towel dry your hair or air-dry it, spray, then style," Faraj says.

4. Consider Your Haircut

Thicker hair could be as easy as a new haircut. "Girls with thinner hair should cut their hair to shoulder or chin length with soft layers for a thickening effect," says Faraj.

5. Choose The Right Brush

Did you ever think your brush could help you out with thicker locks? According to Faraj, choosing a boar bristle brush totally can. "The brush restores the ph level back in the hair to balance oils, promoting healthy hair growth and nourishment."

6. Change How You Style It

If you want to fake thick hair, it all boils down to how you style it. Faraj says, "by using a curling iron on the roots to bump it up and leaving the ends straight, it will give you a beachy, full look."
