'iZombie' May Not Rise Again For A While

by Kaitlin Reilly

In Season 2 of iZombie, Liv has finally adjusted to her zombie state. The show has featured a lot less of Liv bemoaning her undead status and far more of her kicking butt. Viewers have seen Liv digest the brain of a country singer, stripper, and even a vigilante superhero — all brains that have given her access to lots of useful information about the owner's untimely death and lots of hilarious "Liv-on-brain" moments. Luckily, there will be plenty more where that came from, since iZombie will return for Season 3. That means we'll have plenty of more opportunities to solve crimes alongside Liv, Ravi, and Clive, not to mention finally get to the bottom of this whole zombie thing. Now the real question is, when will iZombie Season 3 premiere? Unfortunately, we may have to wait a while. Update: At The CW's Upfront presentation, the network confirmed that iZombie will return at midseason.

Earlier: The iZombie renewal came along with the news that The CW was renewing a whopping eight of its established series, including fellow hilarious, female-focused series Jane The Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Though iZombie has received positive reviews from critics (Season 2 currently has a 100 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes), it has never pulled in outstanding numbers in terms of ratings. Still, fans held their breath hoping for a renewal, and the TV gods spoke in their favor. That's great news, because we need a ton of answers about zombies, utopium, and Max Rager before this show sings its swan song.

Right now Liv has several villains that she needs to contend with moving forward — the villainous CEO of Max Rager, Stacey Boss, and Blaine. All three of these moving pieces are deeply connected with the zombie outbreak in Seattle, either because they are the indirect cause of it or are benefitting from it. Though we still don't know exactly how zombiism came to be in this universe, we know that a combination of Max Rager and tainted utopium, which Boss provides, can trigger the virus. And while Season 2 has focused on the takedown of Boss, the kingpin's reach extends just far enough to be out of our characters' grasp. Shutting down this operation likely won't be wrapped up nicely in the season finale — and fortunately, it doesn't have to be.

As for when we'll actually get some of these answers, we're looking at a wait of at least a few months. The first season of iZombie began in March and ended in June, while Season 2 began in October and will end in April. It's more likely that Season 3 will follow the latter, and again return in October, putting the hiatus at about six months. However, Entertainment Weekly reported that of the eight CW shows renewed at once, "Some will hit the airwaves for midseason or even summer 2017." Since iZombie has debuted at midseason before, it is possible that it could be one of the series held for midseason, making the hiatus closer to a year.

Hopefully, that won't be the case, though fans should still prepare for a very long, iZombie-less summer, at the minimum. But hey, at least, like one of Liv's visions, we know Season 3 is coming.
