Amy Schumer Officially Meets The Parents

by Jamie Primeau

Back in January, Amy Schumer began dating Ben Hanisch. Since then, the two have posted plenty of Instagram selfies and attended major award shows together. And guess what? She's even met his entire family. On Tuesday night's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Schumer talked about meeting Hanisch's mom. As usual with this comedian, it's a pretty funny story. She said,

His family is so nice. They live in Illinois. His mom's the most excited person you'll ever meet in your life. Her name is Deb ... So, I told her, "Deb, they're going to call you. Just say 'no comment." And she's like, "Oh, I got it, Amy. Don't you worry. No comment. Not a problem." Not even 10 minutes later I get a Google alert from TIME magazine that Deb was like,"'I've never heard of her before in my life!" Too far, Deb! Too far. You took it too far, Deb. She's so sweet."

How hilarious is that? Suddenly, things makes a lot more sense. When they first started dating, Hanisch's mom told TIME she didn't know Schumer at all. She said, "I think she’s terrific. She’s so sweet. But I haven’t talked to her yet. I don’t know her at all, and I had never really heard of the name before all this." The quote itself is a bit confusing, since she says that Schumer is sweet, yet she's never met her. There are some contradictions in there that are cleared up, now knowing she was just trying to throw off the press. A+ for effort, Deb!

As for Schumer and Hanisch, their relationship is still going strong. She joked about how when they first dated, everyone was shocked. Schumer believes people were surprised by how good-looking he is. She said,

We met and like totally fell in love and it's been really good, and it became viral Internet news. I think it's because he's really cute and people were like, "What? Dating Amy? He has all his teeth!" Like, people were shocked. They were shocked.

Honestly, I don't think people really thought that he was too good for her. If anything, I think I was surprised when they started dating, only because Schumer always seemed so adamant about being independent — or at least having more casual relationships. But I think it's adorable how happy they are and how supportive he is of her career. Hanisch even shared an Instagram promoting her Fallon appearance.

Now that the record is set straight, it's nice to know that Schumer has a great relationship with not only her boyfriend, but his family too. No need for drama! Plus, it's awesome she has a sense of humor about the whole thing. But then again, it's not surprising. Because come on, she's Amy Schumer.
