Whitney Port's Got Some Valuable Sunscreen Advice

by Augusta Statz

When it comes to your skincare routine, you’ve got to amp things up during the summer months. All of the time spent sunbathing can really take a toll on your skin. So, you’ve probably done your fair share of reading up on the best types of sunscreens to use, etc. like the savvy beauty guru you are (or are hoping to become) in order to fully enjoy all of that fun in the sun. Whitney Port has one very important sunscreen tip, and it's likely to prevent you from getting sneaky sunburn even after you've applied SPF. So jot this one down — because it’ll serve as a good reminder for the next time you strip down to your bikini, lather yourself up, and head outdoors for a swim.

Port suggests being very careful to apply your SPF-packed lotion along the edges of your swimwear (or whatever you’re wearing while out in the sun, for that matter). “You have to always apply around the lines of your bathing suit,” she tells me over the phone. “I feel like we’re always just focusing on our arms or our legs and the major spots, but I think where everyone gets the most sunburned is around the lining of your bathing suit.”

The main areas to be mindful of are near your armpit, underneath your chest and along the underneath part of your bathing suit bottoms, she tells me. "I feel like those are always the spots," she says. And she's got a good point.

This may seem like it adds even more to your pre-going-out-in-the-sun checklist, and frankly, it does. Port admits, “I spend so much time putting on sunscreen. It’s annoying,” proving that no one is exempt from feeling irritated by how time consuming this process is, but it is such a key step of prepping before ever heading outside. So, we all just have to grin and bear it so that we can be fully protected.

Your skin will definitely thank you for it, especially if you're using the right products.

Port recommends using Aveeno for your SPF needs if you have a similar skin type to hers. "Any Aveeno product for my skin is always good because it's just really clean and simple and doesn't irritate," she says.
