Why You Should Go To Prom Alone
If you are debating whether or not to attend prom with a date this year, I vote that you go solo. True, my vote might not count for that much considering I don't know you personally, but I'm here now ready to tell you why you should go to prom alone regardless.
I went to both of my high school proms, once as a junior and once as a senior. I also went once with a date and once without a date. I 100 percent had a better time going solo than taking the traditional date route. In fact, if I could go back in time I would have gone to both proms solo. It was so much better going on my own.
If you don't want to go to prom with someone this year, or can't be bothered to stress out about a date, don't worry about it. If you really want to go with a date, then that is your call, but consider these six reasons why you might want to do your own thing for the night. From freedom on the dance floor to spending more time with you friends, here is why I honestly think prom is way better when you're flying solo.
1. You Can Dance With Whoever You Want.
When you go to the prom solo, the dance floor really is your oyster. You don't have to feel tied down to one dance partner, which means you can move it all around the floor. I'm not saying you have to steal other people's dates, but dancing with somebody for a few measures of Rihanna isn't going to kill anyone.
2. You Can Spend More Time With Your Friends.
Years after high school is over, you'll only be in touch with those who meant the most to you while you were there.... I'm talking about your besties. Your squad. Whatever word you use to describe them, spending prom night making memories with your friends is way more valuable than a one time crush you'll think is a total loser in 10 years.
3. You Can Flirt With Everybody.
Your prom mingling doesn't have to be held back either when you go to prom alone. You're going to be dressed up, looking lovely — why not be the beautifully independent woman charming everyone at the party? Tonight is yours, so let loose.
4. You Don't Have To Coordinate Your Dress With Anyone.
Coordinating outfits are so embarrassing — I don't know why that hasn't been established yet in the world of prom. The best part of going solo to prom is undeniably that you don't have to walk through the entrance of the venue with your dress perfectly matching your date's tie. Gag.
5. You Don't Have To Take Awkward Prom Photos.
OK, I take all that back, if there's one thing worse than walking into prom matching your date, it's having to take a dorky prom photo with them in front of a painted night sky (or whatever horrible theme your school has come up with) backdrop.
6. You Can Show Up And Leave Whenever You Want To.
No date means no promises. So you're running a little late to prom? No big deal. So the whole thing turns out to be whack? You can leave early. You're on your own schedule, which means you don't have to feel pressured to stay for the entirety of the event if you're not feeling it.
