If your head hasn't exploded from the endless possibilities of Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens heroine Rey's parentage yet, it's time to add a whole new layer to this mystery. Though many fans assumed that Rey's parents would be already existing Star Wars characters, like Han Solo and General Leia, or Luke Skywalker and a still-unknown lady friend, nothing has been confirmed yet, and a number of theories are still floating around the Internet about who, exactly, Rey's mom and dad could be. In fact, fans are already speculating that we may meet Rey's mother in stand-alone Star Wars film Rogue One — specifically, they're theorizing that Rey's mother could be Jyn Erso, the heroine of Rogue One. And, if that is the case, then our knowledge of Rey's family is expanding. According to his interview with Sky News, Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen will play Jyn's father in Rogue One, and now fans are losing their minds over what that could mean. Could Mikkelson be playing Rey's grandfather?

The potential reveal of Jyn as Rey's mother won't be nearly as mind-blowing as, say, Darth Vader being Luke and Leia's father, but considering that Mikkelsen could potentially be adding to Rey's family tree, it does open up questions about how deeply Rey is tied into the greater mythology of the Star Wars universe. Colin Trevorrow, the director of Star Wars: Episode IX, hinted that Rey's background is not only important to audience members who want to see Rey reunited with her family, but to the larger story as well. He told Collider:

What I do know is that we’re going to make sure that [the] answer [about Rey's parents] is deeply and profoundly satisfying, because Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens but in the entire galaxy, and she deserves it. So we’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was — it’s something that happened a long time ago [in a galaxy] far, far away, we’re just telling you what happened.
The inclusion of Mikkelson as Jyn's father would certainly add another layer to Rey's background, should Jyn be revealed to be Rey's mother in the new film. But no matter who Jyn is or Mikkelson really plays, one thing's for sure: answers are coming.
