How To Prepare Your Hair For Graduation

by Jessica Willingham

Graduation day is almost here! Whether you're graduating from high school, college, or grad school, you are no doubt already planning your look for the big day. If you're wondering how to do you hair for graduation so it looks great under your cap, I've got you covered.

Graduation day presents a number of style and beauty challenges. What if your shoes sink in the grass? Are you having a ceremony indoors or outdoors? What's the weather like? Will your hair fall? Will you cry? Do you have waterproof mascara, opposed to simply water resistant?

You get the idea. When it comes to graduation hair, the challenges are especially...challenging. First, you want the cap to stay on. You also want to look timeless and chic. After all, a million pictures will be taken on this day and shared with your friends and family for years to come. Plus, you'll want stray hairs out of your face — especially if you're delivering a commencement speech.

Below are some of my favorite looks (and most crucial considerations) for your hair on graduation day.

1. Prepare For The Weather

Hopefully you won't get rained on during your graduation ceremony, but it's always best to prepare for some serious heat and humidity. Keep flyaway strands at bay with a braid and seal with humidity protector.

2. Go Natural

You may be tempted to go all out with your hair and makeup for graduation, but keeping things natural will make the day easier. First, your cap will fit naturally and comfortably, and your hair will hold up through hugs and humidity.

If your graduation cap doesn't come with no-slide grips, use bobby pins that match your hair color. Throw extras into your pocket or clutch in case you or a classmate needs one later.

3. Don't Neglect Your Roots

Yes, graduation is about taking wings and flying into the next chapter of your life, but that graduation cap can create wicked hat hair. Tease 1-2 inch sections of hair at your roots and set in place with hairspray.

While the idea of having a fancy 'do for graduation might sound like a good idea, it's important to consider these three key factors when deciding on a style. Even the prettiest of updos and blowouts won't stand a chance against wind or heat!
