7 Prom Trends Your Parents Wouldn’t Let You Wear

Prom season is here, and it means reminiscing on your previous prom experience. From the limo ride to the venue to the shenanigans post-prom, it's hard to forget those experiences, good and bad. Those bad ones also include the prom trends your parents wouldn't let you wear. From all-over body glitter to cut-out gowns, your parents had their no-gos, and in hind sight, some of them may not have been a bad call. Whether it was helping you avoid looking orange with a spray tan or preventing you from rocking early '00s Christina Aguilera-style black eyeliner, there were certain prom trends you wanted to rock but your parents may just have saved you from.

Prom trends have come a long way in the past decade or so. From spaghetti strap sheath dresses to over-the-top ball gowns, style options for prom are vast, even now. In fact, 2016's most popular prom dress is a major departure from the fully beaded and fitted gowns commonly seen at prom. With students spending more than ever on their prom dresses, they've seemed to get more and more lavish, but the prom trends your parents wouldn't let you wear didn't always center on the gown itself. Beauty was a big portion of prom, and celebrity influence totally played a part in what your non-parent approved plan may have been.

So what prom trends would your parents not let you wear? Let's take a trip down memory lane...

Halter Dress

Whether it was the exposed back or how it dipped low in the front, halter dresses were ruled out by many parents who thought you were still too young to rock the look.

Crop Tops

In a fun twist, crop tops are a prom trend this year, but back when Bianca wore it in 10 Things I Hate About You, it was definitely frowned upon by some parents.

Body glitter was probably a good call, guys. To be honest, our parents refusal to let you bring glitter into their home where it would inevitably get onto every surface of the house was an excellent call.

It was one of the biggest trends in the 00s, but your parents — and the school's prom dress code — just may not have been into it as much as you were.

I mean, let's be honest, did we really think our parents would let us rock this one?
