13 Weird '90s Movies You Def Wished Were Real

by Olivia Truffaut-Wong

Movies are supposed to take you on a journey — be it magical or more realistic, it doesn't matter. And while it might sound cheesy to say that movies transport you, it's true. Of course, just because a film brings you in and introduces you to a new world, that doesn't mean that you would actually want to live in that world. Why, for example, would anyone in their right mind actually want to live in a world where you can be trapped inside a board game for decades (à la Jumanji)? Or a world where kids are rounded up and slaughtered for sport (see: The Hunger Games)? Yeah, I'll pass on those. However, there are a few movies that you can't help but wish were actually real, such as the 13 weird '90s movies below.

As you might remember, the '90s were a golden age of weird movies, what with the early dabbles in CGI technology and the market for fantasy and science-fiction genre movies. The decade brought us so many unique movie worlds — some far more appealing than others, but all of them very memorable. But, out of all the '90s movies, the 13 picks below were the ones that many of us really wished would actually happen IRL.

1. Toy Story

Toy Story had kids everywhere trying to catch their toys coming to life when they weren't there. It also had us all dreaming of being loved by our toys so deeply, they would suffer through torture to get back to you.

2. Jurassic Park

I'm terrified of dinosaurs, but even I wouldn't be able to resist going to a real life Jurassic Park.

3. The Addams Family

Be honest, you totally spent a few Thanksgivings wishing you were sitting with the Addams Family instead of your own family.

4. The Matrix

If The Matrix were real, would you take the blue pill and continue on living your fake life, or would you take the red pill and learn the secrets of the world?

5. Hook

Because what kid didn't dream of going to Neverland?

6. Matilda

Evil Mrs. Trunchbull aside, Matilda is a dream world where magic and reality co-exist — who doesn't want to live in a world with magic?

7. Men In Black

I'm pretty sure Men In Black isn't real... right?

8. Halloweentown

This Disney Channel Original movie had all young girls praying for magical powers when they turned 13.

9. Galaxy Quest

In most '90s movies, aliens are out to destroy the Earth (Independence Day ring any bells?), but not in Galaxy Quest, which is just one of the many reasons why Galaxy Quest should totally be real.

10. Casper

Because I want to be BFFs with a friendly ghost, please!

11. Space Jam

Space Jam literally brings cartoons to life — is there any greater dream for a '90s kid?

12. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie

If Power Rangers were real, there would be rainbow crime fighters saving the world on a daily basis. Just think about that for a minute.

13. Zenon: Girl Of The 21st Century

The idea of growing up on a space station away from Earth is a bit scary — wouldn't you get bored never meeting anybody new? That said, there's no denying that the world of Zenon is pretty damn cool.

Maybe one day some of these '90s movies will become a reality. But, until then, I guess we should just be thankful the movies exist in the first place.
