Ben & Jerry Are Officially Geniuses

by Nathalie O'Neill

Ben & Jerry's, with its delicious cornucopia of flavors and ethically responsible practices (hello, their starting salary is double the minimum wage), has long been a serious contender for #1 ice cream of our hearts. Now, Ben & Jerry's four new Core flavors might just have ensured the company a permanent spot in our good graces.

Each Core flavor has two kinds of ice cream (except for the Salted Caramel variety, which only has one) and a filling center that runs all the way down the pint, from top to bottom. Finally, a way to fit all the best Ben & Jerry's has to offer in just one scoop.

"We wanted to blow out the concept of fun flavors, chunks and swirls and take it over the top," said Eric Fredette, the lead flavor developer for Ben & Jerry's.

The four new flavors are Hazed and Confused, That's My Jam, Peanut Butter Fudge, and Salted Caramel.

Hazed and Confused is chocolate and hazelnut ice creams with fudge chips and a hazelnut fudge center that, apparently, tastes like creamy Nutella.

That's My Jam is raspberry and chocolate ice creams with fudge chips around a raspberry core (which is pretty much just raspberry jam, seeds and all).

Peanut Butter Fudge is chocolate and peanut butter ice creams with mini peanut butter cups and a peanut butter fudge core. Yep, that's right: a peanut butter core, delightfully sticking to the roof of your mouth, just like the real thing.

Salted Caramel is sweet cream ice cream with blonde brownies and a salty caramel core.

Ben & Jerry's Core flavors will be hitting stores this month, at $4.39 a pint. In the spring, you'll be able to head over to your local Ben & Jerry's shop for a customizable Core Sundae, with a core of hot fudge or caramel between any two flavors. Fellow ice cream lovers: run, don't walk.
