Disney Films You Can Already Watch on Netflix

by Mary Grace Garis

You probably nearly fell out of your seat when you found out every Disney movies is coming to Netflix, a blessing of epic proportions. Shortly thereafter you were probably devastated to find out the truth: that the Disney movies available for streaming are only films that were released after January 1, 2016. Womp, womp. It’s a let down, for sure, but, on the bright side, there’s still plenty of viable Disney movies you can already stream on Netflix.

“Viable” is the strongest terminology I could use here, because you’re not going to find prime Disney renaissance picks like Aladdin or Hercules. It’s sort of a mixed bag, and you have to rummage through a lot of wonkiness to get to some good stuff, and even then? Most of the time you have to be in a mood to digest some of these films.

But it’s fine, I can help you out with that. Do some quick soul-searching about what you’re in the mood for, and I’ll match you up with a Disney film. You should be set no matter what, even if you just wanted to sink your teeth into The Little Mermaid. Scroll down, and see what Netflix has to offer you right now.

1. The Emperor’s New Groove

Thumbnail Synopsis: David Spade gets turned into a llama.

Watch If: You're not feeling the saccharine outdated feel of Cinderella, and you can't bear to watch Frozen one more time, feminist as it is. Spending time with Kuzco, the sassiest Disney Princess, is a good compromise.

2. Robin Hood

Thumbnail Synopsis: He takes from the rich and gives to the poor... also he's a fox for some reason.

Watch If: You're looking for something a little retro, and vintage, or if you have strange taste in men. The hotness of this Robin Hood is Mindy Kaling endorsed.

3. An Extremely Goofy Movie

Thumbnail Synopsis: Goofy's son Max is headed off to college, and, look out, because Goofy's coming with him.

Watch If: You're at a dark crossroads in your life and could use something, well, goofy. Or something that's plays out like an 1980s ski movie. Both.

4. Mulan

Thumbnail Synopsis: Mulan takes her father's place in the army by going undercover as a man. Will she be discovered? (Yes.)

Watch If: You need some empowerment pronto, or if you just want to hear "I'll Make A Man Out Of You." Let's get down to business.

5. Lilo & Stitch

Thumbnail Synopsis: Lilo is a lonely little hula girl, Stitch is an unruly alien, Lilo adopts Stitch and wackiness (and intergalactic drama) ensues.

Watch If: You want a movie about low-key rebels that's a little beachy and isn't Pirates of the Caribbean.

6. High School Musical

Thumbnail Synopsis: Yeah, it's basically just Grease.

Watch If: You were a tween during High School Musical-mania and want to relive that part of your adolescence. Or if you missed the cut-off like me and want to subject yourself to something ridiculous.

7. High School Musical 2

Thumbnail Synopsis: The Wildcats work at a country club and evil Sharpay tries to get in between golden couple Troy and Gabriella.

Watch If: You ended up watching High School Musical due to your lack of shame and now need to see what happens next, or if you just need something even more ridiculously hilarious than the first film.

8. Tarzan

Thumbnail Synopsis: Tarzan's been raised by monkeys or whatever, so you can imagine that his decorum when interacting with the proper Jane Porter is just... so proper.

Watch If: You're really into Phil Collins.

9. Fantasia

Thumbnail Synopsis: Oh, lots of things happen, mostly to music, sometimes involving uncooperative magic broomsticks.

Watch If: You really want to appreciate the artistry of Disney.

10. Cadet Kelly

Thumbnail Synopsis: Free spirit Hilary Duff ends up in military school.

Watch If: You really don't want any artistry in your Disney.

11. The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Thumbnail Synopsis: Quasimodo has low self-esteem, and there are also gypsies.

Watch If: You're craving a Disney classic and are OK with the fact that this movie is dark AF and more than a little politically incorrect. Definitely don't turn to this one if you're looking for something lighthearted.

See? You've got a lot of options no matter what your movie watching mood is at the moment. Have at it, fellow Disney fans.
