In a candid and frankly inspirational statement posted to Twitter Saturday night, Zayn Malik revealed that he was unable to perform at the U.K.'s Capital FM Summertime Ball that night due to "the worst anxiety of his career." Malik's honest, heartfelt explanation — and the revelation of his intense struggle with anxiety — was primarily met with high praise from fans, who applauded the singer for speaking out about mental health issues, despite their disappointment that he would no longer be performing. But it wasn't just fans who were lauding Malik: Gigi Hadid's unwavering support of Malik, and the heartfelt message she wrote in response, is just as important as the singer's message.
Hadid, who seems to be back with the "Pillowtalk" singer after a brief split last week, responded to Malik's honesty with an incredibly important and eye-opening statement of her own:
"Z — I've seen the battles you go through and the way you fight to get to a place that allows you to get up there for your fans. Your bravery in those times makes me proud, but your honesty last night proved what you're all about, being real. Human recognizes human. You made the best of the situation and have given your fans an opportunity to understand you better as a performer. Those who can find compassion now are the ones that deserve to watch you continue to grow. We are all here to support you and make each experience easier. Your talent and good heart will never lead you wrong. Love you and so proud of you always :) xG."
Though one partner's anxiety can definitely take its toll on a relationship, Hadid expressed no anger or disappointment towards Malik. She expressed no shame or judgement. Instead, as someone who has witnessed Malik's anxiety first-hand, she praised the singer for his bravery: the courage it takes to fight through anxiety, the strong backbone it takes to be honest about it, and the incredible, frightening bravery it takes to disappoint professionally in front of the entire world.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 40 million adults in the U.S. suffer from anxiety, and "support is an important part of recovery." Though millions of fans praised Malik for his honesty and sympathized with his anxiety, others were more callous, angry that the singer couldn't just fight through it and criticized his professionalism for seemingly "backing out" at the last minute. And this — this is exactly why Hadid's support is so crucial.
Hadid knows better, because she understands the crippling effects that anxiety can have on someone. And her support means everything — not just to Malik, though he clearly has someone in his corner who understands the exhausting battles of mental health. But to everyone out there fighting with anxiety: With Hadid's message to Malik, the public can now see that there are people who will "get it"; people who will understand your limitations and praise you for recognizing them. People who will support you instead of shame you; people who will recognize your courage even when you don't. These are the people you need to surround yourself with. And Gigi Hadid's staunch support of Zayn Malik is proof that these kinds of people exist.
