14 Times Miley Made A Case For Androgynous Fashion

by Rosie Narasaki

Over the years, the ever-evolving actress/pop star Miley Cyrus has made a great case for androgynous fashion. Sure, she may be better known for her teddy bear jumpsuits, her barely-there silver suspenders, and her general ability to take the phrase "go big or go home" to a whole new level, but she also happens to be great at the whole androgynous look — heck, she even sang the song "Androgynous" with Joan Jett and Jane Grace a little over a year ago. More recently, she performed a gender-bending performance of "I'm Your Man," and "I'm a Woman" on Maya Rudolph and Martin Short's new variety show, Maya and Morty.

From crisp white blazers and designer leather jackets to oversized overalls and equally oversized sports jerseys, Cyrus been known to make just about every aspect of androgynous fashion sing — especially as paired with her signature cropped platinum 'do (and often with her equally signature atomic red lipstick). It all lines up with her awesome, gender-nonconforming attitude — after all, as she explained to Out, "I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: Being a girl isn’t what I hate, it’s the box that I get put into."

Cyrus has made a reputation as a major risk taker, and that most definitely applies to her fashion sense — so let's take a look at some of her best androgynous fashion moments from over the years.

1. In A Tux (and Top Hat!)

She rocked something of a Marlene Dietrich-inspired androgynous chanteuse look when she performed on The Maya and Marty Show.

Definitely a very cute way of styling a basketball jersey.

The pared-down makeup and slicked-back hair make this quite the unexpected look on Cyrus.

Girl sure knows how to wear a good jersey.

Can't say I love the sweats/jeans hybrid, but that jacket is very, very cool.

The chain belt kind of makes the look, right?
