6 Face Wash Alternatives You Never Thought Of

by Jessica Willingham

If you're anything like me, you'll do whatever it takes to get a clear complexion. That can mean a rigorous beauty routine, expensive department store products, or just some really weird solutions. Like I said: whatever it takes. But it doesn't have to be that difficult or expensive. There are things that you already have in your kitchen that make for great face cleanswers. Here are six weird things that work well as face wash. Prepare to be surprised!

I love a solid natural product that does my body good and my bank account even better. So when I found out that face wash can be made from household products, simple ingredients from the fridge, or an everyday item you use to cook with, I was so interested. If they really work, why is no one else using them? It's easy to be skeptical about putting yogurt on your face for the sake of beauty, but I'm willing to try anything.

A great face wash should be tough enough to wipe away matte foundation and liquid lipstick, but gentle enough you aren't having to tug at and scrub your skin for everything to come off. If it's antibacterial, moisturizing, and smells great? Bonus.

Below are a few of the strangest, but most effective products to use as a face wash. Give it a try — just be ready for some strange looks when you ask to use your roomie's yogurt.

1. Yogurt

Yeah, that's right. I said "yogurt." Plain, unsweetened yogurt can be an incredibly calming cleanser for the skin. According to this Bustle reporter, "The lactic acid is a naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acid that acts as an exfoliator, the active bacteria cultures help balance the bacterial situation on your epidermis, and calcium is really important for your skin’s health and moisture (though I think you might have to eat the yogurt to get this benefit)." Either way, washing with yogurt can reduce inflammation and improve your skin.

2. Olive Oil

Olive oil is one of my favorite unconventional face washes. It smells like delicious Italian food (who could say no to that?) and is a super gentle makeup remover. It's also highly moisturizing (like the natural oil occurring in your skin), so your face will feel like a dream.

3. Honey

Honey face wash results in super soft skin and can actually reduce your acne. Make sure you get the raw, unfiltered kind for best results.

4. Coconut Oil

If you have hydration issues, coconut oil face wash may be the solution for you. It may not eradicate your acne, but the soothing hydration will definitely take the redness and inflammation down a notch. Check out fellow Bustle writer Hayli Goode's story to learn how to do it.

5. Witch Hazel

Oily skinned girls and guys will love washing with Witch Hazel, because this is one of nature's original toners. It'll disinfect and really fight acne.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar

Another great toner/wash that does double duty and really fights acne, apple cider vinegar works great when mixed with warm water.
