He may have dressed like a robot at the Met Gala, but Zayn Malik's latest interview revealed he may actually believe in aliens. Or in the very least, he's blaming the supernatural for a major life decision. In an interview with Glamour, Malik shared why he left One Direction and honestly, this changes everything. He told the magazine, "An alien spoke to me in a dream…." This answer is kind of bizarre, yet hilariously awesome. It's unclear whether he was being sincere.
Based on the tone of the rest and the Q&A, Malik may have been aiming for sarcasm. For instance, when asked his favorite thing to do with old friends, he said, "We do this weird thing: We communicate with words." So the alien comment could have been a joke too, but regardless, I love this explanation so much more than the original. If you'll recall, Malik announced his 1D departure on Facebook in March 2015. Here's an excerpt:
After five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.
Unfortunately, that explanation proved to be untrue when he soon reemerged in the limelight with a solo career. It's hard to view that reasoning as genuine when he decided to make his own music right after. Why'd you have to lie to us, Zayn?
But since it's now been nearly a year-and-a-half since his departure, I think fans can look at the situation and his recent remarks with a sense of humor. One Direction has successfully continued on without him, as Malik forged his own path on the music scene. It's basically a win-win. Plus, if it really was an alien who encouraged the career move, that was one wise creature.
Maybe it took him so long to reveal the truth because he didn't know how the public would respond to such a supernatural story. Or perhaps (the more likely option) he was just goofing off. Regardless, I'm choosing to believe the alien explanation. It's more fun that way.
