Catch Up On 'Ab Fab' Before The New Movie

by Johnny Brayson

There's a new movie coming out that looks absolutely fabulous. OK, I'm being cheeky. There's actually a movie coming out called Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, which stars Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley as an aging publicist and editor, respectively, who go on the run after they believe they've killed supermodel Kate Moss. Sounds pretty wild and fun, but if you're not British, you might be wondering why they had to add the subtitle "The Movie." The answer is that Absolutely Fabulous is a TV show in Britain; and a wildly popular one at that. So if you want to catch up on the show before seeing the movie, you're probably wondering: when will Absolutely Fabulous be on Netflix?

Unfortunately, it's not there yet, and it's unclear when it'll arrive, if ever. The female-driven British sitcom had a highly unusual run by American standards, airing sporadically over a 20 year period. The first three seasons aired from 1992 until 1995. The show then returned for two specials in 1996, before taking five years off prior to season 4 in 2001. Another special aired in 2002, which was followed by the fifth and final season in 2003. The show then returned for a special each of the following two years before taking a break for another 8 years and then returning for four 20th anniversary special episodes that aired in 2011 and 2012. So despite the 20 year history of the show, there are actually only 39 episodes — totally marathon-able amount. But if you can't watch them on Netflix, then where can you watch them?

Luckily, if you're a Hulu subscriber, then you can stream almost every episode of Absolutely Fabulous for free. The streaming service lists 36 episodes in its library, and is missing only three specials from the later years. That should give you more than enough material to become familiarized with these characters before seeing the movie when it hits theaters on July 22. If you don't have a Hulu subscription, then you have a couple of options. If you've never signed up for Hulu before, you can try it for a week for free and binge like crazy. Or, if you don't mind spending some money, you can buy single episodes for $1.99 from both iTunes and Amazon. If you're looking to buy in bulk, season one and the 20th Anniversary Specials Collection will each set you back $4.99, and all other seasons are $7.99 apiece at both outlets.

So even though Absolutely Fabulous isn't on Netflix, there are still plenty of other ways to the show. Isn't the 21st Century great?
