Evan McMullin Will Pose Presidential Challenge

by Emily Shire

Update: On Monday afternoon, Evan McMullin formally launched his presidential bid as a third-party candidate through his statement "My Letter to America," with the tagline, "It's never too late to do the right thing." Deadlines to make it onto the general election ballot have already passed in 26 states.

According to the group backing him, Better for America, Evan McMullin will run for president as a third-party candidate this year. ABC News received confirmation from the group, as well as an exclusive statement which McMullin is set to release later:

In a year where Americans have lost faith in the candidates of both major parties, it’s time for a generation of new leadership to step up. It’s never too late to do the right thing, and America deserves much better than either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton can offer us. I humbly offer myself as a leader who can give millions of disaffected Americans a conservative choice for President.

According to ABC News, McMullin is set to officially file later on Monday. It was also reported Monday morning by Bloomberg's Sahil Kapur that a GOP aide confirmed that McMullin had stepped down from his job as chief policy director of the House Republican Conference, and was "no longer an employee of the House Republican Conference."
