Gisele Skips The Closing Ceremony

by Michelle McGahan

ICYMI — or you've been too busy counting Simone Biles' gold medals or figuring out what exactly went down in #LochteGate — iconic Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen walked the catwalk during the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics. Her super long, Simba-aging-as-he-walks-over-the-log walk immediately inspired good-natured memes all across Twitter, as did the brilliant grin she broke out during her runway walk. Since the closing ceremony is always a little more bittersweet than the jubilation of the opening ceremony (maybe it's just me, but the fact that the Olympics are over and I have to wait another four years to watch artistic gymnastics always bums me out), it's obvious that Brazil needs some Gisele in attendance — you know, just to help meme things up. Is Gisele Bündchen at the closing ceremony?

Unfortunately, she skipped this one. Bündchen posted a message on Instagram during the closing ceremony congratulating this year's athletes and shouting out her home country for a job well done. She wrote her message first in Portuguese and then wrote in English:

Congratulations to all of the Olympic athletes, especially to our 465 Brazilian athletes! Thank you for giving your best and representing our country so well. Thank you for showing that with focus, hard work, and determination anything is possible. It's beautiful and inspiring to see how sports unite people. What a thrill! What pride! May we continue to lead with uniting the world with positivity and joy for all our days ahead.

The leggy model could not have been more proud to represent Brazil in the opening ceremony. In fact, she later Instagrammed so much of it that it felt like everyone was right there, with her, doing that loooong, long walk.

"It was very exciting to be part of this special moment. Everyone involved worked with dedication and passion to create a show that gave the world a glimpse of our history and Brazil's essence. It was beautifully presented," she later captioned one of her opening ceremony photos, writing the sentiment in both Portuguese and English. "Our Brazilian community is hard working, cheerful, and welcoming. I believe that we showed the world the beauty of our diversity. #gratitude #riocidademaravilhosa #rio2016."

While Bündchen did not attend the closing ceremony, the Internet — as well as the lady herself — is grateful for the model's appearance at the opener.
