5 Fashionable Stars Who Don't Have Stylists

by Mary Avant

Last week, The Hollywood Reporter unveiled its always-anticipated “Most Powerful Stylists” list, which ranks the year's top 25 stylists and names their famous Hollywood clients. The 2014 list included names like Elizabeth Stewart, Rachel Zoe, and Rob Zangardi, among others, who dress stars like Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, and Gwen Stefani, respectively.

And while there’s no doubt that the work these extremely talented and supremely stylish men and women do is both impressive and important in the land of Hollywood and beyond — we're looking at you, Micaela Erlanger, and your ability to make Lupita Nyong’o our instant fashion obsession this awards season — there are some stars who have chosen to forego a stylist altogether, proving they can leave the house looking super chic and put together all on their own. Take a look at five stars who have the guts to hit the red carpet without the help of a stylist — and who look really damn good doing it.

1. Emmy Rossum

The Shameless star and brunette beauty is the most recent celebrity to speak out about her no-stylist mindset, telling The Huffington Post last week that she chooses to go sans-stylist because she loves fashion, "just love[s] playing with clothes," and is “shallow” enough to want all the style credit for herself (her words, not ours). And so far, throughout the young actress’s career, the choice has paid off handsomely. Rossum has already earned a reputation for her classic-meets-modern style, perfecting both minimal and traditional looks and becoming a muse for brands like DKNY and Carolina Herrera.

2. Blake Lively

We’ll be the first to say that some of Lively’s early style choices were a little too chest- and leg-baring to be considered super stylish, likely because she didn't have a stylist to temper the gorgeous Gossip Girl's wild side. But over time Lively’s style has gotten increasingly more polished, mature, and yes, fabulous. These days, you’ll see the face of L’Oreal Paris rocking subtly sexy pieces that are tasteful but still pack the glitz and glamour she’s been known for from the start.

3. Diane Kruger

Stylist or no stylist, this fashion icon can do no wrong, as it’s nearly impossible to find an outfit Kruger doesn’t look good in. Designers like Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld likely go crazy for Kruger in part because the star can throw on and shine in outfits that many stars would never even attempt on the red carpet. With her refreshing, fearless approach to fashion, the former-model-turned-actress is never afraid to take a sartorial risk — something that’s especially commendable considering she makes her style choices all on her own.

4. Marion Cotillard

French women have a reputation for flawless fashion, and this French actress more than upholds it. Cotillard never fails to look anything but très chic in her glamorous gowns, flirty frocks, and elegant ensembles, and continually nails that always-in-fashion minimalism that so few stars can get right.

5. January Jones

She may be highly styled in '60s-era garb for her role as Betty Draper in Mad Men, but in everyday life, Jones goes it alone when it comes to her red-carpet choices. The blonde bombshell loves to capitalize on her innate sexiness, choosing cutouts, curve-hugging ensembles, and a slew of strapless gowns to show off her self-made style.

Sure, stylists can (and often do) create works of art out of their client’s ensembles, but this handful of chic celebs is proof that some stars can do just as well on their own.
