by Augusta Statz

The time has nearly come to crown Miss America 2017. But before we move on, the current holder of the Miss America crown still has a little more time to enjoy her title. Who is Miss America 2016? If you don’t know by now, it’s high time you found out. On Sept.13, 2015, Betty Cantrell was crowned Miss America 2016.

According to the Miss America website, Cantrell is a 21-year old from Warner Robins, Georgia. During her time as Miss America, she’s been traveling the country spreading her message, “Healthy Children, Strong America.” She encourages children to eat healthy and maintain an active lifestyle. She’s also the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. So, clearly, she’s got a special place in her heart for children.

She’s done a lot of important work already during her year long reign. But, in an interview with Cosmopolitan, she opened up about the fact that it’s not easy to be “on” all of the time. “Whenever I'm tired or don't feel like being Miss America, the one thing I always think about is the kids in Children's Miracle Network, she said. “That is what makes me remember why I did this in the first place, why I want to make an impact this year, and why what I do matters. And that's what gets me in the mindset.”
